Only the cities are real...
I built an entirely fictional universe, and this is the first chance I've had to actually use it in practice. I haven't input any international leagues, yet, but there are currently 334 teams in 26 North American leagues. (I don't have good nicknames for the teams, or names for the leagues or the divisions in them. It's always a work in progress.) I also input my own modifiers to be used in all leagues:
*All strategic tendencies set to Normal, 4 Man Rotations. *PCMs set according to predetermined league "strength rating." *Hits: .973, 2B: .828, 3B: 1.285, HR: .957, BB: 1.051, HBP: .502, K: .745, BABIP: .290, E: 1.122, DP: .765, WP & PB: 1.191, SF: .551, SH: 1.214, SBA: .806, SB%: .925 I don't know that those mods will work (though I tested them beforehand), but this isn't exactly realistic to begin with. They're supposed to increase balls in play, if nothing else. The league rules and options are also set according to the strength rating. The lower the rating, the lower the salaries, the shorter the seasons, etc. There are three tiers of leagues. The major league is 30 teams large, in 5 divisions of 6 teams each. Division 1: Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver Division 2: Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, San Jose Division 3: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, St. Louis Division 4: Baltimore, Charlotte, Columbus, Miami, Tampa Division 5: Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis Division 6: Boston, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto There are five second-tier leagues, and 20 third-tier leagues. The major league season is 154 games. The postseason is three rounds, all of which are seven-game series, 2-3-2. The leagues stagger their starts, depending on their geographical latitude. All leagues are independent. The (blurgh) DH is in global effect. There is no spring training (there's a reason for this). I'm starting in 1924, but with no time-line adjustments to financials. I took a job in Yuma, in one of the third-tier leagues, hoping to work my way up. In the meantime, I watched a game between Beaumont and Lake Charles, in another lower-level league based in Texas and Louisiana. I went to see Rob Avery, the highest-rated pitcher (40-40-55) in that league, start for Lake Charles. Naturally, he got shelled to the tune of 7 runs and 12 hits in 6 and 2/3 IP. The star of the game was one of Beaumont's best young players, catcher Fred Johnston, who hit two homers and drove in five runs. (He, by the way, is making his league's minimum salary, at a little over $13,000 a year.) Johnston has four bombs and eight RBI to rank among the league leaders after a week. I'm up to my league's Opening Day. Yuma opens up at home against Santa Fe. My team's owner has just informed me that he expects us to play .500 or better this year. A decent all-around hitter who depends more on raw power than contact ability, pitchers can induce him to chase outside pitches when ahead in the count. While not blessed with good speed, Dillard has refined his fielding ability, so that his above-average range compensates for the occasional error and a below-average arm. Dillard's not a leader by nature, nor does he have a spotless reputation. Though he is often believed to be too laid-back, he's otherwise positively regarded for his commitment to his organization and for his relentless support of his teammates.
