Sub .500 Division Champions
Hey. In my Solo League, the Kansas City Royals won the American League Central, with a 76-86 record. They went all the way to the ALCS, when they were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles with a 82-82 Record. I'm wondering if anyone had to deal with this, and what happend to the team. Just curious... Thanks!

I have seen it happen twice in back-to-back years. In 1994 & 1995 the AL West winner had sub-500 records. It was one of the things that was being discussed during the 1994 season, when the strike hit the Rangers were 10 games under .500.

In my solo fictional league I had the Milwaukee Brewers win the NL Central Division and go on to win the World Series with a record of 80-82. Their rival in the World Series? The Boston Red Sox who had the amazing record of 110-52 and who had destroyed the AL. They won the AL East by more than 25 games and swept their opponants in the ALDS and ALCS. Even in the game the Red Sox get no love. That Bambino Curse follows them everywhere.

The Baseball Maelstrom Cardinals won the NL Central with an 80-82 record. They faced the 120-42 Mets (with the most dominant pitching rotation in the league - Mathewson, Seaver, Ishii, Sid Fernandez). The Cardinals won the 1st 2 games in New York and seemed poised for the upset. Unfortunately, they couldn't win another game, losing 3 straight. The Mets went on to dominantly win the World Series.

In my fictional league, which is roughly based on the Independent Atlantic League, the Newark Bears, in 1981, won the Southern League with a record of 80 and 82. The next two teams (Somerset and Atlantic City) were 79 and 83. Last place Camden was 77 and 85. Three games from worst to first? That was the only sub .500 team I've ever seen win a division, and the tightest race I've ever seen.

i havent seen this happen in my league, but i am gettin the case of NFL type fever in my league.
In 2006 the Minnesota Twins won the World Series. In 2007 they finished fourth in their division. In 2007 the Phillies won the World Series. Currently in mid June of 2008, they are in last place with a sub.500 record in the NL East. In fact, the past couple of champions have been as followed: 2004: Padres 2005: Cardinals 2006: Twins 2007: Phillies Only the Cardinals have been as far as the NLCS after winning the Championship. They lost in 7 games to the Twins in the 2007 World Series. The Padres have remained competitive through 2007, but then decided to trade Pedro Martinez (the most dominant pitcher in my league) for 2 minor leaguers and Sammy Sosa (currently with 760+ career home runs and still goin). The Pads arent that dominant anymore. Goes to show that pitchin is very very important. Interesting to see that every year, almost every team has a shot at winning a championship. Every team in my league has finished at least in 3rd place in their division. Not bad. |

Funny you mentioned this. Just today I finished simming year 1 of my solo league using KOD's rosters. My Minnesota Twins won the division with a record of 80-82. Currently I am tied with the Yankees 1-1 in the divisional series.

It's a team that won a division with a losing record (i.e. sub .500 record) not a team who's next year had a losing record

In the LBA, an online league, the Whitesand Whalers won the Elos division with a 74-80 record. The Elos division is the brunt of many jokes as a result.
Of course, that's the division I'm in.
