Question About Waivers...

Just wondering, when a player gets waived does the team that signs him retain his existing contract? I would have thought that when he gets waived his contract would be cancelled. I'm asking 'cause in my dynasty a rather famous player was waived and picked up by another team and still has the same contract with the new team.
