Jimmy McLarnin

Okay for the historians on the board .. is McLarnin a legit 13?

I have no idea but came across him and he beat some double digit rated fighters but also lost to a 5 and a 7.

He seems like a hard rate.

Where is Cap he probably saw him fight.

Mike, thats hilarious unless I'm wrong Cap probably never saw him fight, but McLarnin is definately comparable to Barney Ross, as they had three great fights, and according to some reports McLarnin may well have won two of them.

Yeah that's what made me think his 13 was legit but he lost to a 5 and a 7 along the way too .. seemed like maybe he was a Jermain Taylor of his day where he fought to the level of his competition.

Trust me on this one Jimmy was a genuine All Time Great. By all accounts one of the very best. Some other fighters in the game have good records but there competition left a lot to be desired. Other have losses on there records but when your meeting other class fighters its inevitable fights are going to be very close at times.

Strange you know Mike you guys are doing now what i suggested doing ages ago. If you remember, i said in my opinion instead of looking for more and more fighters to add to the game. The first thing that needs to be done is refine the original fighters that came with the game. In other words better to have quality then quantity.

Mind you a lot might not have agreed on my rating of Ali and a few others
But the mistake most people make in rating Ali is they take all the assets of the young Clay and then add on the strengths and wisdom that the older Ali had. Combine the two and therefore get a fighter who in fact never existed.
Keep your eye on things buddy

I think any of these problems in early and mid career for McClarnin may be attributable to his begining his career at 112 and growing into his adult welterweight size of 147 through the first half of his career. In 1926 when he lost 3 bouts to Bud Taylor, Johnny Farr, and Doc Snell he was only 20 years. He was fighting guys like Memphis Pal moore and Fidel LaBarba in his second year as a pro. The only problem I've ever had with his ranking in the game is with his power. He was called, in the Ring Magazine, when at his prime, the hardest puncher in boxing by Nat Fleisher. This isn't reflected in the game because he only had 20 wins by stoppage, just 25 % of his bouts but you won't stop a lot of opponents when they all have whiskers like steelwoool. He suffers from the same type of disrespect regarding power as Tony Canzoneri.
