2007 baseball season set for a great finish

I was looking at the standings today and marveling at how, really, no team is running away with things. The Mets' 5-game lead in the NL East is the biggest cushion, and it doesn't feel particularly secure. Even the Red Sox, who were running away with things earlier, are now only 4 games up and facing a Yankee team that has more than made up for its first half slump.

Most years, there is at least one division that feels like a lock for a particular team by mid-August. And usually you can kind of tell which division will produce the wild card. Not this year. It seems like many more teams than usual are in the hunt, which should make for a really great September to remember.

When is the last time there were so many tight races going into the stretch run?

I don't remember the year, but I remember when the Cubs and Giants had a playoff game for the playoffs...

The year Brant Brown dropped the last out of the game and eventually losing it and forcing a tie... Man, that was horrible.

Wasn't that 1998, when Sammy Sosa got 66 HR?

This has not been a good season in the slightest.

I may be biased, however.

Seconded re: the excitement. It has been a great year for baseball, on the field, at least...

If you have to play a one game playoff to get to the playoffs, does that count as the playoffs?

Now 5 games up again. As long as the Mets are the only team from New York with a lead I'm happy.

I think it's going to be a great end to the season...
