Online Play

I'm in the middle of a fictional season living in New York. My 26 year old son lives in Michigan. He is an avid X Box guy, like most kids his age. We have a long history of loving baseball together. We would sit on the couch when he was young, watch the Mets and talk pitch counts, talk about what pitch was coming next..... We still talk 3 or 4 times a day. Most of the time it's about sports. He is costantly trying to get me to buy X Box or Play Station Games to be able to play him on-line, but I am horible at those games. He would love to be able to play against me with OOTP. So I told him there was an on-line element to the game. I told him I would read the manual and see how I get get him up and running in mid season. I after reading the manual I realized there really is no element of on line head to head play. I'm not missing something am I? The on line element of the game is more like "Fantasy Baseball" right. No one plays any real games? Having said all that, is there any way to add this as a new element of the game? I would lovee to be able to share a season with him and manage against him, and kick his butt.
Thanks,

Wiggans

Head-to-head play has been a long requested feature. It was, IIRC, supposed to be in OOTP6 but was scrapped when Markus ran into too many difficulties coding it.

OOTP 2007 does feature the ability for two managers to play directly against each other, but only locally.

In theory, you could use some sort of remote desktop software like TightVNC (which is freeware) so that you can share the desktop over the internet, although I'm not sure how responsive OOTP would be to such a scenario.

My Dad (he's 60) and I play in a two-person on-line league. There are 16 teams, eight in each league, and we each control one team per league. While we can't manage against each other in head-to-head play, I have the league uploaded to a website, and he exports instructions. We simulate a couple of weeks at a time. For us, the favorite parts of the season are draft day and the free agency period. We are both stat junkies and so we love getting a number of seasons completed and developing good career leaderboards.

In our opinion, this is so much better than simple arcade play. You can focus on the managerial aspects of the game (e.g. lineup and rotation selection, setting general strategies), but just not in an in-game setting.

We want all that! The draft, the teams, the uniforms, the stadiums, the stats. But all of it doesn't make a difference if we can't play against each other.

Just to get this straight. I'm not looking for an arcade element. We just want to manage head to head.

Again, there should be no reason why you can't play in "Hot Seat" mode with TightVNC.

It's a workaround, but it should be possible.

Since you can't play just against each other I would suggest both of you finding an online league that has two teams open in the same division. Then you get to play each other a bit.

I'm sorry. As I said, maybe I missed something. Are you saying that I can find an ootp on-line league and manage against him (actual game play, head to head) as long as both teams are in the same division? If that's the case why cant he just choose a team in the same division with the team that I'm managing and play in my league?

No, there is no built in head-to-head real-time managing, online anyway. Eriqjaffe's idea might be a suitable workaround, though!
