"Import Entire History"

My computer -- apparently -- either lacks the CPU or the RAM or whatever it takes, to easily use this exciting sounding feature. Before I devote hours-upon-hours and risk my computer locking up, I'd like to hear some impressions on how it works . . .

One thing that concerns me -- which I noticed in my 1910 import test -- was that there was a tab in the player profile for "real life stats" that showed the entire career, even beyond 1910. Did I miss the option to turn this off, or is it a hard-wired thing?

Lastly, what (if anything) am I doing wrong to make the import take so long. I suppose it should take multiple hours since it imports so much, but how long is it taking everyone else, as a comparison?

thanks in advance.

EDIT: can't edit title, I guess. I'm referring to "Import Complete History" to be clear.

Oh yeah, does anyone plan to release a template/quickstart of a 2006-with-history league? Perhaps this would be a more manageable way for some people to start these kind of leagues . . .

It's in there for good. I like the feature, myself.

As for the length of time, I can't help you. I've got a five year old computer, but it only took me somewhere between an hour or two to import up to 1962.

Yeah, importing the entire history takes a long time. On my fairly recent computer w/ 1.5 gigs of ram, it took about 45 minutes or so to import the entire history up until 1995.

What in the hell is wrong with my computer then? It took me 8 hours to import to 1985. My computer is only 2 years old and I built it myself.

I guess I am using ATA hard drives -- could that be it? My processor is very fast and I have a gig of RAM.

Do you know what kind of hard drives you have?

And you have the box checked to import the entire history?

Hmm...it definitely wasnt quick, but I want to say it was around 5-10 minutes to import to year 1988 for me. I guess it couldnt have been much longer as it didnt make me go watch a movie or anything.

My CPU is a little over a year old. Its a P4 3 GHz with 1GB of RAM.

One thing you might want to try...get your system running as quick as possible first...defrag, & stop any unnecessary processes & make sure you arent multitasking with other apps when you run it. That might be a bit obvious, but it might help.

Do you know what kind of hard drives you are running? A RAID setup?

There is no way there can be that much disparity between your importing and my importing. Are you sure you have clicked import entire history? Maybe it is because I'm using Gambo's DB? I'll try importing the other one and see if it is faster.

Yep it definitely imported the entire db up to that point. I was using Lahman.

I kinda jacked up what I wanted to do as choosing 1988 imported only to the 1987 stats instead of 1988's stats. I wanted to start in 1989 so I was missing a year in everybody's stats. Maybe I'll try it again tonight & time it...but I know it wasnt longer than 15 minutes as I would have given up & walked away if it did. But maybe it's quirky & variable, I dont know.

Ok that does not make ANY sense -- Lahman's database takes 10 minutes to load 1985 and Gambo's DB takes 8 hours to load 1986.

I guess I should have mentioned that I was using Lahman's database and it took me 16.5 mins on my desktop and 28 minutes on my laptop, I can't complain about that, this game is awesome...

Yeah, I just can't figure out why my computer takes so long to load the Gambo DB. Is there something about it that makes it take longer?

I just completed a new import using Lahman 54. 12 minutes exactly to import up to year 1989.

I think some of the historical databases behave differently.
Not confirmed, but I've seen at least one person (Bobbuttons) have it basically never finish using Gambo's, and finish quickly with Lahman 54.

If you're having this issue, I'd say try Lahman 54. If it's still not working, come look for the thread about this in Tech Support, and join the discussion.

The expectation is that you should be able to import up to modern days within I'd say an hour or so, with the obvious caveat that everyone has different hardware. I mean, basically, if you leave it for six hours, and it's at 2% done, that's not right.

I have never even heard of Gambo DB, is it supposed to be better?

It is supposed to be more accurate as far as when players really entered the league.
