MLB to have new dress code for 2003
Well, nice to see baseball is really going after its big problems.
"Baseball to eliminate baggy pants, shirts" http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0920/1434316.html

Jeff Bagwell will have to change up. He's the only one I can think of off the top of my head who really wears his stuff baggy.

Manny Ramirez is another person who'll have to change.

I think this is a good idea.. For those baseball players complaining, they can always go spend a day in the NFL and see what a real dress code is. Just ask Payton Manning.

I think the NFL has set the standad for ridiculousness when it comes to policing the players uniforms. We'll see if MLB can come close.
I wonder if Barry Bonds will get special exemption with this like he does with his body armor?

Barry will no doubt claim that he should be exempted from the rule because he has a pre-existing body.

Derek Bell is another. Someone's going to have to find his boat and tell him...

I've waited a long time for this rule to be implemented... David Wells and others look like total slobs when the wear their uniforms as they do today.

I don't know why anyone would care, frankly. What about back in the day when they wore the flannels? They were baggy as hell, and everyone thinks that was great.

I don't mind what style of uniform that the players wear, as long as they are clean. Biggio drives me crazy with his batting helmet that hasn't been clean since it came out of the box 4 years ago when the team changed uniforms (He got mad then 'cuz he had to throw out his older and nastier helmet). And he's not the only one who has pine tar helmet or sweat stain hat. To me that's just silly. This isn't the back yard, this is a multi-million dollar industry and these guys are wearing helmets and hats that could get up and walk out on their on. Take a little pride in yourself and clean up a little. You are a professional. Dress like it.
And don't give me any of this good luck crap. These are grown men, they need to act (by dressing) like it. I know, I know, Crash Davis covered this in Bull Durham, talking about the shower shoes. But it's not colorful. It's lazy. |

Some of the players wear some extremely dirty baseball caps as well.

About time they did something about the "no elastic" pants.
Nothing looks more stupid than a guy whose uniform pants are basically sweat pants with no elastic in the bottom of the leg. Make 'em wear 'em high, like they're supposed to be worn! In my playing days, the higher they were, the cooler they looked! |

I agree with you Cooleyvol. I like the high pants also. Also, I think they'll let the players wear them a little baggy as long as it's not sloppy. There's a difference. The old flannel gear they used to wear was baggy but it wasn't sloppy. In fact, it was quite manly in my opinion.

IMO they want the players to look consistent, clean, and not like slobs. Hopefully the weird things like the gold jewelry and sharktooth necklaces will be banished as well.

I cannot believe this thread turned serious.
Some people need to go back to rearranging their sock drawers and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. Baseball unis are by far the cleanest and most presentable of all the sports. Do you see Nike/Reebok logos on baseball, football, basketball, soccer or hockey unis? There is the only place you need to keep the image clean. There are 750 major leaguers, more now that it is September. I have seen about 5 names tossed around that look "bad" in their uniforms. The only ones that might need a talking to are Wells and Livan Hernandez. Two out of 750.... and we need legislation in the CBA? If you don't like the sweaty hats, the roughed-up batting helmets, etc... then get back in the kitchen and be quiet.

Here, here Red Blow. The roughed up batting helmits and sweaty hats have always been very cool. And I must agree that baseball does sport some of the cleanest unis.
