How do you use your scouts?

I'm curious how everyone uses their scouts -

Used to be, I'd give 'em tasks, send to scout the entirety of MLB, scout other teams, leagues, etc... I used the "scout foreign nation" as my default "when idle" task... Eventually, I pretty much quit scouting MLB - and just focused on scouting teams I might be trading with at the deadline and prior to the winter meetings... Now, though, I don't even both with that.

All 6 of my scouts scout foreign nations ALL YEAR except for 3 weeks in May (ammy draft scouting) and October (scout my own organization in preparation for the offseason).

I do use 'Quick Scout' fairly often (combing the waiver wire, FA pool, occasional AI trade offers) --- but other than that, for 300 days a year, I have them toiling abroad.

The end result is that I've been able to build "isolationist dynasties" pretty easily... My haul of foreign FAs is usually 15-20 per year - 3-5 of them are usually studs. The ones I don't have room for at the big league level just become trading chits (usually for draft picks).

The end result is that I've very poor intelligence on the rest of the league - but then, I stay out of the free agent market almost entirely and usually only make trades I initiate. Still -- just by keeping the focus on my own team, I've built perennial 100 game winners without too much damage due to being oblivious to the rest of the league.

I'm curious as to tactics of others -- at this stage, I see no upside to any of the other tasks.

Basically the same as you, except I have my head scout scout my entire organization and send a report every 20 days.

and I do have 1 scout (my worst one, so he gets a lot of scouting in. I don't know if this builds his ratings or not, but I hope so

Head scout: Scouts MLB right after amateur draft; when finished, scouts organizations or does odd jobs until next amateur draft pool is created.

Scouts 1-4: Continually scouting each level of minor leagues. I made this convenient by having one league for each level of minors (MLBAAA, MLBAA, MLBA, MLBRookie) with the actual leagues as divisions (and some artistic license).

Scout 5: Continually scouts my NCAA college feeder league. Since this is 100 teams, it takes him over a year to just quick-scout that league, but it's better than nothing.

Nice and neat, because I do not scout nations for hidden players.

I have my head scout scouting out the major league teams (in my league) in a rotating cycle , and sending a report after each team (approx 9 days). I have one scout scouting out AAA, one scouting AA, and all the others in foreign nations.

I have my head scout, do the up comming games durring the season and then does the orginization twice (once after my games are done and once around spring training) and Quick scouts the league during the off season.

Scout 1, roates through scouting each team in my system.

Scout 2, scouts the 3 main leagues in the world, about 1 a year or so.

Scout 3, scouts the feeder league.

Scout 4 and 5 scout other nations, changing countries every spring training.

I use head and scout 1 to scout the draft.

Pretty much what I do. No hidden players either. I stopped scouting my feeder leagues though, I fiured I could wait until the draft, and I could look at the league leaders to get a good idea who is going to be good. Now I have them each scout one league, then my organization. This gives me a good look at my players.

I spent the 1st 4 seasons of my dynasty mostly having them scout nations... but like some others have said, that is entirely too effective, so I'm going to discontinue using that aspect. Instead, I'm working on assigning them all tasks that consume exactly 365 days a year for each of them, then put them on cycle task list. I'll consistently tweak it, and try to get as many different scouts opinions as possible on the higher levels, while making sure I have at least 3 scouts available come May for the Draft Pool. I also have a table that shows what dates I must start scouting leagues, for both the regular "scout" and "quickscout", in order to have it completed in time for the start of the season, the trading deadling, and the end of the season.
