Let them die
I don't think this is a high priority for inclusion on future versions of the game, but I'd be in favour of being able to kill off players rather than leave them in limbo as continually aging cretins in some baseball players nursing home somewhere.
It would also be usuful to be able to kill off a player rather than use the CEI as a means of getting them out of a storyline since I've seen a few CEI's come back a few years later. A star's career cut short happens in Real Life, e.g. Thurmon Munson etc. Also I'd like to be able to keep successful managers and coaches around longer. It looks like the game has a mandatory retirement function built in around 65 which means I won't see a Connie Mack in my game who keeps managing until they pry the lineup card out of his cold hands. |

I can't see this happening anytime soon, cos i'm guessing people would complain about it being morbid.

I did add a 'fatal' diagnosis to the injury database, as a 10 to 20 year injury. It happened once in twenty years of simming (which seems realistic to me), but the injury turned out to be a 12-month one. So by the time I noticed it had happened, and I opened the player profile, I saw 'Diagnosis: DEAD. Recovery Time: 3 months.'
In any case, I'd like to see some extremely rare events in OOTP, particularly ones that could be introduced in a customizable way. A fatal injury could be one of many such events. |

I had a similar request a long time back, which led to the creation of a third party "event generator", where you could enter in particular events (e.g. plane crash wipes out team, player dies, and some less morbid things) and set the frequency of each. I don't recall if it actually made the changes in the game, but it would generate an event and apply it to a player/team, and you could make it happen.
I have added in death as a career-ending injury before, but I have found that it happens too often. I do wish there could be a way to edit the frequency of individual injuries by weighting them.

Death and obituaries are feature requests I made and are in the Test Track system for review.

I think an example of this is when J. Henry Waugh used to make a dice roll in his Universal Baseball Association to find out when retired ball players passed on.
It would help the immersion tremendously if some favorite player from forty years past cropped up in the news of your current year due to his passing. The news could even pick an old teammate at random to offer a comment on the death. As with all the latest features, there could be a box to check for those who thought the death of players, even the retired ones, was too morbid a subject to think about.

I like this idea, it gives a more complete simulation. I always liked the idea of a "team" hall of fame where you can retire a players number. This would limit some of the "obits" to hall of famers of either the league or a team. Then when a hall of famer dies the team he played for can have a black arm band on the left sleeve of the uniform.

I'm also one that has been pushing for this since 2006 beta testing. Will continue to do so until we get it.

I think it's a great idea, also. In addition it would be nice to add criminal convictions for steroids (I'm sure this has been mentioned before), gambling in the dugout, domestic abuse, and other flirtations with the law that could get one banned temporarily or permanently).

I'm all for this one as well. Make sure we get it posted in the appropriate new Suggestion area when the opportunity arises. Death is most certainly a fact of life I'd rather not have included in real life, but obviously we can't turn the option off.
As for the game though, with rare exceptions, more reality is a step toward more immersion. If this is ever implemented, I'd further suggest in the interest of fictional worlds that an "average life expectancy" range be available for entry in setup.

I would be surprised to see this added to the game. Sports Interactive has long had a policy of keeping such issues out of its games. That is due in part to licensing and the fear that implementing drug suspensions or anything that might reflect negatively on players would lead to revocation of licenses.
Granted, OOTPBB is not a licensed product, but the developers at SI have always been adamant about never adding deaths to its products, even if it is ultimately unrealistic. So, even if Markus wanted to add this feature, I would fully expect the management at SI Towers to prevent it. |

Yes, but it's not the same. I think it would add a level of immersion in a world to see the fellows pass on into the Field of Dreams. It might be a neat thing to have some historical guys write a canned 1 paragraph obit for Cooperstown enshrinees, and have the player's demise trigger a news story with a brief article about the game's loss.

Are you talking about the OP's intention? I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that statement, but I don't see any reason the 'range' idea could not be considered for implementation in fictional settings. Most of us would certainly want traditional mortality rates for our fictional lives, but I can see the customization possibilities for those who might consider a Logan's Run League or something similar. I wouldn't think, or want, this to be limitied to historical imports if the idea is ever embraced.
I see your point though, that historical data might be more easily input and adapted for those leagues. I'd like to see the rest of us included in an option of that sort, though.

I don't think this should be considered a historical request. It is also something that would work well in fictional leagues. In fact, it would lose a lot of its morbidity that way.
