Ivan Calderon (for Meade or any other SW expert)
I was browsing on BoxRec earlier (one of my several daily stops) and was looking at SW mainstay Ivan Calderon's record and noticed that he is moving up to 108lbs to face Hugo Cazares for the WBO JFLY title. I'm just curious was it because he had problems making weight or was it because he wasn't getting the fights with the top Asian SW's? Also with Calderon's abandoning of the division does it make Eagle Kyowa the main man at 105?

I. Calderon is moving up to Jr. Fly Wt mainly for the money and also to try and become a two-time champion.
It wasn't about making weight - He'll probably weigh in at the SW level when he faces Hugo Cazares for his Jr. Fly Wt Title... Being the WBO champion he wasn't "ranked" by the other governing bodies (WBC, WBA, IBF)....and unification fights are always tough to Iron out.... I. Calderon is a great boxer. Much like a SW version of Sweet Pea Whitaker. He went a number of title fight defenses with hardly losing even a single round.....(though he has very little power....Less then Sweet Pea even)... Eagle Kyowa is the class of the SW now (though making weight is starting to get to him....I've been told). I think Eagle Kyowa would have beaten Calderon had the two faced each other. Eagle has the hand and foot speed to contend with Calderon....Eagle throws great combinations and is physically very strong for a SW (he'd score more KO's if he sat down on his punches more)... Calderon Vs Cazares is definitely going to be an interesting fight. Can Calderon takes the shots of a strong puncher and bigger guy like Cazares (and Cazares is big for a Jr. Fly)......Calderon will either box Cazares in cricles and win a UD.....or he gets KO'd....... My guess right now is Calderon wins a DEC..... |

Calderon has excellent boxing ability and has beaten most of the guys that have passed through the SW division. I have heard that Eagle Kyowa has struggled with weight and it wouldn't surprise me if he moved up and joined Calderon at JFLY. If they ever fought, it would be a great chess match type of fight but I would give the slight edge to Eagle.
I would favor Calderon in this upcoming fight with Cazares. Although Cazares is a power puncher, I just don't see Calderon letting him just land punches at will and he'll just box his way to a wide UD. |

Another reason that makes the Cazares Vs Calderon fight interesting (outside of it being a SW champion moving up to take on a Jr. Fly Champ)....
Is to see not only if Calderon can take Cazares power....but seeing if age is catching up with Calderon.... His recent fight (close dec win) over Barrera gives one reason to wonder if his legs are still fully there..... Definitely going to be an interesting fight.... It will also be interesting to see if Rodel Mayol gets another title shot (since his war with Eagle Kyowa)... |

I would like to see Mayol get another title shot. He's an exciting fight with power in both hands. Was looking at BoxRec and noticed his last fight was at JFLY. Was that just a catchweight or is he moving up as well?
Calderon was defintely in a tought fight with Barerra. When I saw that "Iron Boy" won by SD it definitely shocked me considering he usually wins his fights with ease. |

I could be wrong, but it sure seems like that division is finaly taking hold. There are a number of good fighters at that weight and many seem to be hanging longer than they were 5 to 10 years ago.
