New York Yankees: An OOTP 12 Dynasty

Cashman Steps Down, Citing "Irreconcilable Differences" with Ownership
March 28th, 2011

In one of the biggest spring training surprises of 2011, Yankees GM Brian Cashman announced his immediate departure from the organization. Just prior to first pitch at George M. Stienbrenner Field against the Rays, Cashman interrupted manager Joe Girardi's pre-game interview to read the following brief statement:

"It is with great sadness that I must announce that as of tomorrow, I will no longer serve as General Manager of the New York Yankees. While it has been my pleasure to serve this organization, current conditions dictate that a change is in order. I have informed both Hank and Hal of my decision, and they agreed that a termination of our working relationship would be in the best interest of both parties."

When asked by reporters what the reason for his resignation was, Cashman simply cited "irreconcilable differences." An unnamed source within the Yankees front office indicated that this move was entirely unexpected, and that there are currently no serious candidates for the position.

An official statement from the front office indicates that the Yankees are in "deep discussions" with 3 candidates, and should have a new GM by Opening Day.

Surprise! Yankees Hire Unknown, Matt Jordan announced as GM
March 30th, 2011

Well, that certainly didn't take long, just 48 hours after Brian Cashman resigned as GM, the Yankees held a formal press conference to announce their new GM, Matthew Jordan. Jordan, a former business major, and catcher, at Stanford University, had been working as a consultant in the Mariners organization for the past two seasons.

"Mr. Jordan comes to us with a strong business and baseball background, and is at the forefront of talent analysis. We believe he was the best candidate for the position, and that he gives our organization the best chance to win now, and in the future."

At just 28 years old, Jordan becomes the youngest general manager in baseball. Many expected someone such as Kevin Towers to take the position, as a significantly less risky pick. Some have speculated that the Steinbrenner's believe Jordan will be easily controlled, and wanted to hire someone who would carry out their decisions with minimal conflict, as this was frequently a point of contention with Cashman.

C Francisco Cervelli - Herniated Disk, out 3 Months (15-Day DL)

GM's Thoughts:
We have a strong team, and fully expect to compete this season. Obviously we are disappointed that we will be without Feliciano and Marte for our bullpen - we expected them to be important contributors this season. We have Ivan Nova starting with the big league club to start the season, but we'd like to have him starting in AAA, ready to join the rotation if necessary, but we simply don't have another arm that we consider to be ready at this time. We will be scouting the waiver wire and trade market for help in this area as the season progresses.

Another big blow is the that we will be without Cervelli for the majority of the season. I had wanted to keep Posada as our DH, rather than using him behind the plate at all in 2011, however, he will act as our back-up catcher to start the season. As a result, Andruw Jones will be our primary DH.

I will be leaving all rotation and line-up decisions up to Joe Girardi, and I will rely on his input for call-ups and send downs, especially when injuries occur.

Yankees Top 20 Prospects - Pre-Season Edition

Throughout the 2012 season, constant updates will be provided on the Top 10 prospects in the Yankees system. Additionally, general updates on the state of the minor league system, as well as prospects on the rise/decline.

Currently the Yankees farm system ranks as the #10 system in the MLB. The Yankees have 4 players in the Top 100. Projections are over the course of an entire minor league season.

1. Jesus Montero - C - AAA

Montero is the #9 prospect in baseball entering 2011. At 21, he is incredibly young for his level, and incredibly advanced in his abilities. The Yankees expect to keep Montero in AAA for the entirety of 2011, with the expectation that he will join the major league club in 2012. Montero needs to prove that his defense will not be a liability, his bat is already ready for the majors. Teams will likely be inquiring about his availability throughout the 2011 season, but the Yankees are not expected to move him, unless an elite player is available at a position of need.
AAA Projection: .300/.375/.550 - 20 HR - 80 RBIs

2. Dellin Betances - SP - A

Tons of potential, #60 prospect overall, but needs to greatly improve control to make any impact. Many expected Betances to get the call up to AA to start 2011, but the Yankees want to go slow with his development to increase his control and confidence. They will likely reevaluate his performance mid-season, and see if a call up to AA is warranted. Betances is on the 40-man roster, but will not see any major league innings in 2011.
A Projection: 10-6 - 160 IP - 3.50 ERA - 160K/85BB

3. Manny Banuelos - SP - A

The #66th overall prospect in baseball, Banuelos is the most likely pitcher in the Yankees Top 10 to become a consistent major league mainstay. Well-rounded, with no real holes in his game, Banuelos is unlikely to advance passed AA this season. He is just 20 years old and the Yankees do not want to rush, and possibly stunt, his development. If his first half is stunning, a call up to AA would not be unexpected.
A Projection: 12-4 - 165 IP - 3.33 ERA - 145K/60BB

4. Gary Sanchez - C - S A

81st overall on BA's Pre-Season Top 100, Sanchez possibly has a higher ceiling than Montero as a catcher, but he's just 18 years old and far away from making an impact at the MLB level. He's got the ability to be a solid defensive catcher with a plus bat. Sanchez will play in Short Season A Ball this year, with the chance to play a full season in 2012.
S A Projection: .285/.365/.485 - 12 HR - 45 RBIs

5. Hector Noesi - SP - AAA

Just missing out on the Top 100 prospects list, Noesi projects as a solid middle of the rotation starter. Very well rounded, Noesi will start the season in AAA, and likely remain their for the entire 2011 season, barring an injury. Already on the 40-man roster, Noesi could be called up if their is an emergency, but the Yankees view him as a starter long term, and would like to see how he performs over the course of an entire season in AAA.
AAA Projection: 11-7 - 175 IP - 3.80 ERA - 145K/55BB

6. D.J. Mitchell - SP - AA

Mitchell has the stuff to be a #3 or #4 starter, but it hasn't shown in the results yet. He will pitch in AA this season, with the hope he will be a solid starter in the long term, but his stuff might end up playing better out of the bullpen.
AA Projection: 8-8 - 140 IP - 4.00 ERA - 120K/60BB

7. Graham Stoneburner - SP - A

Stoneburner is an interesting case, as he started his Yankees career as a reliever, and has since been moved into the rotation. Not much is expected of Stoneburner in 2011, but should he show signs of life, he could be a great trade piece. His control is great, and has a plus-slider.
A Projection: 6-8 - 135 IP - 4.50 ERA - 110K/35BB

8. David Phelps - SP - AA

Phelps is likely to contribute to the majors in 2012, but not sooner. He projects as an above average reliever, or a back-of-the-rotation starter. He's not going to blow people away, but he has a future in the majors.
AA Projection: 10-7 - 160 IP - 3.85 ERA - 115K/50BB

9. Austin Romine - C - A

Romine could see AA action within a month of the season starting, but the Yankees want to be sure that he's 100% ready before promoting him. Romine should have a long career in the majors, but he won't be an All-Star. If the Yankees are sold on Montero and Sanchez as their catching tandem of the future, Romine could be used in a trade to bring in another starting pitcher.
A Projection: .350/.425/.550 - 13 HR - 65 RBIs
AA Projection: .295/.365/.495 - 10 HR - 65 RBIs

10. Slade Heathcott - CF - A

Scouts are torn on Heathcott's potential. Some see him as an above average, everyday major leaguer, while others see his ceiling as that of a 4th outfielder. Hoping to give him every chance to develop, the Yankees are going to take it slow, and give him at least one full season in A ball before considering a promotion. If he struggles early, a demotion to Short Season A isn't out of the question.
A Projection: .275/.340/.435 - 6 HR - 45 RBI - 20 SB

11. Jeremy Bleich - SP - A
12. Jose A. Ramirez - SP - S A
13. Bryan Mitchell - SP - R
14. Jario Heredia - SP - R
15. Brett Marshall - SP - S A
16. J.R. Murphy - 3B - A
17. Corbin Joseph - 2B - AA
18. David Adams - 2B - AA
19. Angelo Gumbs - SS - S A
20. Steve Garrison - SP - AA

Cool, looks good I will be following. Do you manage all your games or just GM?

Thanks - the more followers, the better! I love when people interact and ask questions, so feel free to fire away (and if you want any info on specific players, within my system or not, just ask!) I just act as the GM - the games are simulated with the manager controlling the in-game decisions. The only thing I will do occasionally is force a player to start at a certain position, but otherwise I tend to leave those type of decisions up to the managers of each level.

Good luck. I'm in year two of a Yankees franchise. Won division in year one and was swept by the Angels in round 1.

Author's Note: Just so you are aware, in terms of injury reports from around the league, I am only providing information on injuries that will keep players out for 3 months or longer (if the injury report says 2-3, I'll report that too). Otherwise, I'd be spending far too long on the write ups. All signings and trades will be posted here, and significant waiver moves will as well.

At the end of the month I'll be doing a larger monthly update, with top players, standings, etc., as well as a GM's Report Card, in which I discuss and grade the progress of the team (and organization as a whole).

In addition to these weekly reports, I will be occasionally doing breaking news reports for big trades, injuries, or news from around the league. I'll also have some special reports throughout the season, covering the trade deadline, the Rule IV (Amateur) draft, etc.

Thanks for following - and if you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions/requests, please don't hesitate to ask or comment!

Excellent franchise reports! My first year Burnett started out 7-1 with a sub 3 ERA. Ended 13-11 with 4.96. Typical Burnett. I'm in year 2 and he is 2-0 in 3 starts with a 2.45 ERA. I expect much of the same. Jetted in year two is 1 for 36 with 1 BB, 2 runs and 1 RBI. Age looks to be catching up with him and the rest of the yanks in year two. Sabathia won the cy for me in yr one and continues to be a beast. Only trade I made was Brackman and two lower level prospects for Chad Qualls. He went 3-1 with 1.72 ERA I'm 71 ip. His contract is killing me though in yr 2. 6 mill for a MR. I brought Montero up I'm Sept and he hit 7 HRS in 59 abs. Looked to start in yr 2 but he is injured for 6 mos so I have Romine and Cervelli doing the C. Anyways good luck I'm your franchise. I will be following along.

SportsCenter Fact of the Day

"The New York Yankees have the best record in baseball at 19-5. But did you know that they are just 2-4 in one-run games? The only game they have lost by more than a single run came on April 10th, against the Red Sox... when they lost 3-1. In their 5 losses, they have been outscored by just 6 total runs."

Well then I hope you have better success with Hector Noesi then !!!

He was part of a trade that send Homer Bailey to the Yankees for Joba Chamberlain.... Had a cup of coffee as they say with the Reds.

Another Yankee prospect I picked up is C Gary Sanchez. I am expecting him to be part of my Reds line up next season..

State of the Organization: MLB

Obviously I am very happy with the performance of our major league club. Our pitching has been outstanding, with CC, AJ, and Hughes completely dominating the competition. The combination of Garcia, Nova, and Colon as our back end of the rotation has been solid, with Colon pitching more out of the pen. Our bullpen is great, Rafael Soriano has proved himself more than capable, with 25 K's in 16 innings - and Mo has been perfect. Joba is developing into a dominant force in our pen.

Our offense has been very strong, but the loss of Swish and Dickerson has significantly hurt our production. I'd like to see Golson get more at bats, in limited time he's been very good. Overall, the team is performing well, and while we expect some normalization on the pitching front, we also expect our offense to perform at a higher level going forward.

State of the Organization: Farm System

Right now, I am disappointed with the performance of our minor league prospects, though our teams are performing well, save Scranton.

Obviously, Jesus Montero is struggling in AAA. I would like to see him get at least one more month in AAA before considering a move, as he clearly has the talent to perform at that level. Banuelos is performing decently, though not at the level we are expecting. When we decided to keep him in A-ball to start the season, we expected dominance. Betances has shown incredible skill, and we expect him back shortly. Noesi, Stoneburner, and Heathcott have all struggled, and adjustments may have to be made if improvement isn't seen in May.

Our best performer has been David Phelps, who won the EL Pitcher of the Month award for April. D.J. Mitchell is also pitching very well, though his control leaves something to be desired.

Looking Forward: May

As we move into May, I do not see a pressing need to make a move at this time. Unless approached with a significant improvement to our organization without giving up our top talent, I do not expect to make a trade.

One of our most recent minor league signings, German Duran, may be called up soon. This would allow us to send down Justin Maxwell, who could use more time in AAA. I am also planning to move Hector Noesi to AA, and Graham Stoneburner to the bullpen unless their performance vastly improves. I want to be patient with Montero, without stunting his development. If he is able to maintain his current level of production, or increase it, I would likely keep him in AAA, but any further regression will necessitate further time in AA to develop.

I have a comment...pick a better team than the Yankees Just kidding.

Your bullpen has been absolutely filthy thus far, it's ridiculous. If the real Yankee pitching was this good, they'd be an unstoppable force. Luckily for the Yankee-haters out there (like me), it's not. Bench Posada!!1!!

I just noticed another Yankee farmharn that is part of my Reds dynasty. SP Adam Warren. He is part of my rotation in 2018
