UFC Welterweight Champion.....Matt Serra?!?!

Did anyone else catch this fight last night? I told everyone I was watching it with, "this could be the biggest upset ever." Four minutes later it happened. Matt Serra is the new Welterweight champion. Very impressive.

I was also happy to see Diego Sanchez lose. Did he even show up to fight, or did he show up not to get knocked out?

Too soon.

GSP losing and the Canadiens getting eliminated from playoff contention by the freakin' Leafs made for a very depressing night.

As for Sanchez, I lost a ton of respect for him. He played up all this hate, including nearly shoving Kos off the stage at the weigh-in, then he didn't bother to fight when he was supposed to.

Yeah very disappointing UFC night!!!!!

I love watching St.Pierre fight, but he only lasted 3 and half minutes before getting knocked out.

Plus I was pretty excited about the Sanchez/Koscheck fight, but it ended up being one of the more boring fights I have ever seen. Koscheck did very little, but he didn't need to do much because the previously undefeated Sanchez didn't do a thing.

The Huerta/Garcia match was unbelievable though.

I'd almost rather watch Slyvia/Monson again than Kos/Sanchez. Almost.

Agreed.

I don't think it was a dissapointing UFC as a whole. Just upsetting with the KOS/Sanchez fight.

Of course, if you're a huge GSP fan then I can understand how it was dissapointing.

Dola,

UFC 70 is being held on Spike TV which is really exciting. There is going to be some awesome fights on that card.

Probably in the top three of all the fights I've seen. Too much smiling, though.

It was an imposter who looked like Diego Sanchez. The mariachi band was off their game as well. That fight sucked, and Koscheck shouldn't have been jumping up and down and sitting on the top of the octagon, because he barely did anything either.

There's been quite a few upsets over the past couple of months in MMA.

If Fedor loses to Lindland, I think that's going to be the sign of the apocalypse.

dola, GSP really didn't take this fight against Serra seriously.

if he did, he would know that Matt Serra's only weakness is to the spinning backfist.

i was not impressed by GSP's first title defense.

I think it was the opposite. I think he was taking him too seriously, and his nerves got to him. The pressure of defending the title or whatever. He had the same look in his eyes that he did for the first Hughes fight. He also seemed too reluctant to step in and use his hands, instead using kicks almost exclusively.

It was also bad luck that he got clipped on the back of the head like he did. It took his legs out, and Serra knew how to finish.

The guy is young. He'll learn from this, just like he learned from the first Hughes fight.

He really is too nice and respectful, IMHO.
He needs to get the killer instinct thing going, particularly when he fights. He's shown it before, so we know he does have it. He needs to have that fighting alter-ego, kind of like what Rampage has going on.

Regardless, he was another UFC fighter stricken down by the UFC All-Access curse. It's MADDENing.

dola, the post you responded to was more or less a joke post.
the spinning backfist reference is to when Shonie Carter beat Serra by that move.
And the "I was not impressed by GSP's performance" line was due to GSP saying the same thing to Matt Hughes after one of Matt's fights.

Everyone always forgets that Matt Hughes said it first, after GSP vs Penn. Georges was trying to be witty when he returned the favor, but everyone just thought he was being a Frenchified jerk.

I did not know that.

I kind of feel bad for GSP. He was getting a big push by the UFC, he was finally getting some recognition back home, and then bam, he loses his most important fight to date.

Hopefully he can get his head back into it, and become the dominant WW alot of people expected him to be.

Not only a big push, but they were writing his name correctly for the first time ever. Maybe someone noticed the hyphen in place of the period when he signed his long term contract after the Hughes fight.

Another big upset with Crocop being KTFO, and brutally at that.

I wasn't necessarily surprised that he lost, but was stunned that Gonzaga gave Mirko a taste of his own medicine.
