2006-2007 Golden State Warriors thread

When I first started following American sports back in '89, I picked a team from each sport that I would support. In football it was the Bengals, in baseball the Braves and in basketball it was the Warriors.

There have been many times since where I've regretted that choice, but it looks like the Warriors have a chance of making the playoffs this year.

This will be a thread to discuss their progress through the season.

Wow, and here I thought I was the only W's fan on these boards.

I think they may be ok this year, though I don't buy the playoff talk that seems to be perking it's head up.

Tonight's a big game, from the standpoint of where they are against the West. If they lose it seems like it's same ol' W's. If they win, things get interesting. They have to hold at home against the 2nd tier (as in teams slotted to be in the 4th-9th range in the West).

Warriors up 40-28 after 1st quarter, shooting 73% from the field.

Hope they can hold on for the rest of the game.

When I started following the NBA, the Warriors were one of the most exciting teams in the league with the whole Run-TMC thing happening. Of course, things have gone pretty sour since then but when I pick a team, I stick with them, no matter how bad they stink (see Bengals mid-90s to early 2000s).

As you should. There's nothing wrong with sticking with a team. I've been a Patriots fan for life and it's just starting to pay off.

You got that right. Did anyone else see it? That had to be the best attacking, running basketball I've seen from any team in years. Davis was just incredible. 36 points, 18 assists and about a dozen highlight reel-worthy plays, whether it was driving to the basket or dishing it off to others. That young kid Ellis has got some speed, while Biedrins and Pietris compliment Davis nicely. And Richardson's still not 100% yet following his off-season knee surgery.

I thought the Warriors would be good this year, but that game really has me excited about their chances. Not to get too carried away, though. I'll be happy if they can just scrape into the playoffs, as that would be progress over what has happened during the last dozen years.

I actually didn't get to watch, but I'm pumped. I think the next 3 at home are big for them. They need to capitalize with 2 of 3 from Sea, Den and Phx. I think it's doable.

The team that I support over here in Australia's National Rugby League competition are the Wests Tigers (known as the Balmain Tigers up until 2000, before they merged with the Western Suburbs Magpies in order to survive). I've followed them since I was only six, back in 1980. They had a great team from the mid 80s through to 1990, making the playoffs seven times in eight years (there were 13 teams in the comp and 5 playoff spots during the 80s), going to the championship game in consecutive years ('88 and '89), losing both before the hard times set in. The 90s and the early part of the 00s were probably their darkest times, never finishing in the top half of the competition during that whole period.

But then in 2003, they signed the game's most experienced coach Tim Sheens. He scraped the team's policy of signing established, nearly over-the-hill players from other clubs and concentrated on developing the younger players in the club. In '03 they went 7-17, in '04 10-14, just missing the playoffs by a single win before the fairytale season of '05, were they went 14-10, finished fourth and won all four of their playoff games to win the championship. That '05 team has been called the most exciting attacking team in the history of the sport by many. Their season was highlighted by an eight game winning streak that took them from 6-8 to 14-8 and a 54-6 victory in the first week of the playoffs.

As great as '05 was for them, '06 was just as unfortunate, as they went 10-14, losing half a dozen games by six points or less (inlcuding two losses to the Canberra Raiders in overtime) and missed the playoffs altogether. They had a horrific injury toll, but hopefully '07 will be a better year for them.

It's funny how the Tigers and the bengals have both come good at the saem time, two teams I've supported for so long who have been terrible for so long. I'm hoping the Warriors can join them with some success this year.

Warriors hold the Jazz to 79 a night after giving up 140 in Denver. That must be one of the biggest defensive turnarounds from one night to the next in a while.

Yeah, big time inconsistencies from this team, as usual. Good to see Barnes step up though...

Warriors just dropped 45 on the Suns in the OPENING QUARTER. They're up by 12 and I hope they can just hold on and win this one.

This game is nuts. 75-63 Warriors with 6 seconds left in the 1st HALF.

Warriors up by 20 midway through the 3rd. They should be able to hold on for the win from here (I hope).

I also really hope that their management can keep this group of players together. If they can stay healthy next season, they could really do some damage.
