Veterans getting worse and minor leaguers not developing

everybody,

let me start by saying that i´m new to the game. i bought it on saturday and i must admit: i love it!
i started a mlb-season with the orioles in 2006. it´s the year 2008 now and all the players i have traded for have at least lost 2 to 3 stars. most of them are now only one-star players. i would understand if they were old veterans - but they were: justin verlander (4 stars, now 1), jonathan papelbon (4 stars, now 2), ervin santana (4 stars, now 1)!
another thing i´ve noticed - and it probably gets me fired soon - is that my minor leagues don´t seem to get any better! i follow the suggestions by the "minor league system report" - thus try not to rush them!
let´s say a player has 5 potential stars - how long does it usually take for him to get "real stars"?

From the manager menu choose options and let the AI manage the minors...Ive found that they do a better jpb than I do and it removes a big headache from the game.

You traded for three pitchers. Pitchers, by design, are very volitile.
