Suggestions for # of amatuer draft rounds
Ok, I've heard a few different things, and a quick search of the forums yielded nothing.
I have a 20 team league, with three levels of minors. How many amatuer draft rounds do you recommend, and further, how many feeder league teams do you think I'd need to fill that draft pool. (I know the feeder league formula is in the game guide) |

With four total levels of play, I would recommend sixteen rounds of draft. I've always felt that five rounds per level was too much and led to premature minor league retirements. (I like having career minor leaguers.)
I think I'd also go a little lighter on the feeder teams than the formula suggests. Posters have been saying that too much talent comes in with feeder leagues, and I'm guessing that reducing the number of teams would help reduce that effect. I think the formula would call for 54 teams to supply 320 players, but I'd push it as low as I could — maybe 45 to start with. Sim a quarter of a century and see if you get a shortfall. If you don't, then drop a school and repeat. When you get to the point of failure, add one back and call that your keeper. Note: You could try the same thing with number of draft rounds. Start with sixteen and sim ahead (probably more than 25 years — maybe forty or fifty) to see if the free agent pool ever completely disappears. If it doesn't, drop one round and repeat. If you do decide to try that, make sure you establish your number of rounds BEFORE experimenting to find the number of feeder teams. |
