1994 chooses a commissioner
In my 1994 dynasty I am looking to appoint a commissioner to step in and solve the labor negations that occurred at that time. The setup and introduction is here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...=1#post2174128
What I would like to do here is get some ideas on who you think the new commissioner should be. Should he be real person or fictional? If real who would be someone in 94 that that would have made a good commissioner at that time. I know this is very open ended but that is going to be part of the fun of this dynasty. |

How about George Brett? He retired in '93.

MLB needed a hard liner. Someone with the ... intestinal fortitude ... to shut everything down for a year or three until he broke the Players Union. Much of what would soon go wrong with MLB and MLB's perception can be attributed to this incident.
I don't hold the owners blameless either. League finances are... warped is a good word. I'd say you need the fictional equivalent of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis or first AL President Ban Johnson - a dictator, someone willing to invoke the 'best interests of baseball' line and take his case directly to the American people. Someone who'll stop the steroids scandal the second it breaks with season long suspensions or banishments, so it won't have a chance to wreck MLB's integrity. (Another reason to deal with the Players' Union in 94.) |

Thanks for the first suggestion Snap. This is why I put this out here I probably would not have come up with a just retired Brett on my own.
And CatKnight your post pretty mush sums up the reson I am giving this dynasty a try. |

Bob Costas and George Will would be my suggestions for commissioner.
Good luck on your dynasty. |

metsgeek: I think you missed his reply to me. He's trying to save MLB, not invade the NHL.

Yeah, but you can't deny he'd be a stubborn bastard who would never give in (even though saner minds would). I'm certainly not a fan, though.

Thanks for the responses.
Bob Costas was the first person that crossed my mind when I thought about this. I could see him being extremely fan friendly and good for the game. The only drawback I associate with him is he might not be a big enough hard ass for some of the stuff I have planned. Metsgeek’s proposal of a political figure brought up what I thought was a good Idea. Pull someone out of the political ranks for the new commissioner. So I looked up the residing US Senators from that time and came across a few names that might work. Bob Dole, Sam Nun, Orrin Hatch, and John McCain, these are just some of the more “famous” names. But as I was going down the list I ran across this guy: http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts...?index=M000019 Connie Mack III grandson of “the” Connie Mack. I know nothing about the guy, but that may not be a bad deal as we could impose whatever persona upon him that we feel like, and still have a historical link that doesn’t seem too off the wall. |

After giving it about a day, I am sold on the Connie Mack III idea.
Thanks for everyone that posted. |
