Two Memorable Games
From my 1960 Historical replay...
The Dodgers John Roseboro breaks up Orlando Pena's bid for a no-hitter with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 9th. Reds beat the Dodgers 3-1.
In the longest game in any of my 40 years experience in baseball simulations, the Giants scored 3 runs in the top of the 26th inning and hung on to beat the Pitates 13-10. Tied at 6-6 after 9 innings, each team scored a run in the 21st inning, then each team scored 3 runs in the 22nd inning. Three runs for the Giants in the top of the 26th went unanswered. The teams combined for 47 hits, 185 at-bats, and 16 pitchers combined to throw 801 pitches. Managers were forced to use a couple of starters on little or no rest, including Giants ace Juan Marichal (29 starts, 247 IP, 19-8, 3.06 ERA), who suffered a ruptured disc and was lost for the season. Time of the game? A marathon 8:13. It was a game that Willie Mays stole 5 bases but also committed his first error of the season in center field after 127 errorless games.
Great stuff. I am hooked.
