Joe Morgan would be proud
Just heard this gem during the 49ers-Ravens game.
"You can't gain yards running towards the line of scrimmage."

It is true though... cuz then once you pass it you turn around and run back to the line of scrimmage. Deep stuff really.

But it's still wrong.
If you get the ball four yards deep in the backfield, you gain four yards to run towards the line of scrimmage. If you stood still, you'd get four fewer yards than if you ran towards the line of scrimmage. |

I think I know what he actually meant, but that's some pretty inexusable phrasing for a professional broadcaster.

I think he was trying to say that you can gain yards running parallel to the line of scrimmage because it was on a reverse where the receiver just kept running laterally instead of cutting up field. Which brings me to another thing. How is it that professional athletes don't have the awareness to throw the football out of bounds on reverses and such when they can see a line of defenders 6-7 yards away, or is it because they would incur a penalty worse than the 8-10 yard loss?

Out of context it sounds silly but if you were viewing the game I'd bet everyone knew what he meant.

I know about the lateral, I was just wondering if you can get flagged for an illegal man downfield if you throw it out of bounds.
