Modifiers a bit disheartening
First don't misrepresent this as a gripe about the game.
I fully understand how one could love the fact that almost everything in the game can be made exactly how you want it... or at least the important stuff. And perhaps I shouldn't have said 'disheartening' as much as somewhat 'frustrating'. I'm talking specifically about the modifiers when setting up a league that have to do with how you want the league to perform hitting and pitching wise. I've tried to use a couple of the suggestions on the board... but have found that they only work if you're using the EXACT same league setup as the modifiers were created for. Any deviance from that setup and the modifiers obviously don't work.. or at least I haven't been able to get them correct. I've probably spent over the past couple of days around 5 hours just tweaking the settings and running a sim... then tweaking them more and running another sim. Probably as everyone else has done. If there is one thing I don't understand about the game (or haven't figured out) is why the game doesn't account for you setting up your own league as far as the number of hits, home runs and etc that you should have... and then you could just modify it from that point..... rather than having to do the league settings yourself in 2 seperate modifications. You would think it wouldn't be that hard to incorporate into the game. Rather than in league setup having to figure out all the league totals yourself... you should have all that set automatically when you set the size of your league (based on todays standards) and then if you want to modify those numbers you could just use the percentages to fix it how you wanted. I fully realize I could be way off... and maybe there is an easy way to do this.. but I haven't found it yet. Again, this isn't enough to make me dislike the game at all... and like I said I LOVE the fact that it is so intricate..... but in this case it could be made a bit simpler in my opinion. |

Take a look over in the mods section for extensive testing that SkyDog has done for fictionals. You can see the kind of results that he's getting with his league totals and then work by modifying just the percentages like you're talking about to get it to your standards.
Hope that helps.

yo
Nope, they didn't work.
Look, I'm not an expert by any means having only played this game for like 3 days now.... so take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be completely wrong and this could be easy and I'm just not paying enough attention (especially today as I'm messing around with all of this while watching like 10 different baseball games on TV)...... but as much as I appreciate what SkyDog did, those numbers for some reason aren't working for my league. I'm running a 16 team league with 1 level of minors and playing a 132 game schedule. Heck, I even went so far as to go back to 1901 and basically input the numbers from that ERA into my modifiers and then tweak them a bit to get them to work......... and to a degree it does but I can't get them right and for some reason when I play with them it doesn't make sense how I can tweak it one way and it does one thing.. and then when I tweak another number it reacts the exact opposite. I know none of that probably makes sense... really it doesn't to me at this point and I'm getting frustrated. I think I'm putting the game away for the evening and going back to practicing with it tomorrow. But just trust me when I tell you that I can't figure out which modifiers to tweak and why there are 2 different modifiers for the same thing... or which one makes the biggest difference.... or whether moving a number up or down makes the results go up or down... because for the different numbers it seems to have diferent results. Ugghh.. yeah I'm just going to give up for now. Last edited by rbartlett; 04-02-2007 at 09:59 PM. |

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with your league since I run 16 team leagues as well.
I've done alot of test leagues this year all with 16 teams some with 4 levels of minors and some with 1 or none. The leagues with less minors were a little more extreme for some numbers but not like your's. I did a few tests with out of the box settings and the results were not terrible, I did some tests with just adjusting the modifiers of the league totals and got some nice results. I never changed the numbers in the league totals section only the modifiers. I tried skydogs settings and did change the numbers to what he had and they were really good, made a couple small changes to a couple of the modifiers but really happy with the 100 yr test leagues I ran. So, I am wondering if you are changing the numbers in the league totals for example hr's to try to match what you think your league will hit. If you are they don't work that way. Also I made the mistake of not changing all of the general strategic settings to what he had and one of the tests I ran had really dominanating pitching. I hope this helps or if not maybe someone else has some ideas and we can get you playing your league. |

Don't adjust both the league totals AND the modifiers. Choose one and stick with it. Most people find the modifiers easier to work with because they work directly — intuitively. That is to say that if you set a modifier to 1.10, it will result in a 10% increase in whatever you're trying to modify.
Changing league totals is counterintutive, since they work inversely. If you think 'I want 10% more homers' and adjust the home run total from 500 up to 550, you just reduced your expected number of homers by about 9% (you'll get 10/11 as many). Best advice is to reset all of your league totals to the default (which doesn't care how many teams are in your league, it'll work anyway), then adjust the modifiers until you're satisfied. |
