Who would you take: Center Field
It's now time to plug a center fielder into your lineups. This one was the toughest thus far to whittle down to 9 candidates to put on the ballot, there are definitely a few more that could gain serious consideration.
Of course, a couple of these guys (Lance Berkman in particular) are being played out of place, but since they play here now, the find the ballot at this spot. Knock yourselves out. NEXT: Right Field Last edited by blubbla; 08-27-2002 at 11:15 PM. |

I'll take Erstad. His grit and determination , plus gold glove D make him my choice.
Am I the only one having trouble voting in the polls? |

Again going with youth:
Andruw Jones for his potential, age and defense. Just too much to pass up for an aging veteran who may have superior numbers. (Note: I really wanted to say Vernon Wells as a Toronto fan but I have to be realistic. At the same age Andruw Jones is so much more experienced and has greater potential if he can reach it). Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells were among the guys I left out ... this was a poll I'd have liked to be able to set up for 15.

On Griffey ... you'd have to make the call on the player you think he is -- or can still be -- at this point in his career.
That goes the same for everybody else in the polls. |

Man, not a Twins fan I guess. I don't understand how you can decide to "leave out" Torii Hunter, and then put him in a category with Vernon Wells.
Preston Wilson made the list? |

That was a terrible omission. Hunter is a gold glover, is batting around .300, has 25 hr's, and leads the team in rbi. In many places, inculing espn.com, he is lised as an mvp candidate. Please tell me you just forgot about him, and that you didnt leave him out on purpose?

Andruw, no question. He puts up big power numbers in a pitcher's park, is the best defensive center fielder to have ever played the game, and has made great strides with his patience at the plate this year.
Normally I wouldn't take a guy for his defense, but when that defense comes with 30-40 HR and 100 BB ... Jason

What about Torii Hunter's defense? I know that Andruw Jones has had better offense, but defensively I would say that they are about even. I don't think that even Andruw could have made the catch that Torii did in the all star game.

But you are a Twins fan so of course you think Torii is better
. I picked Andruw Jones but I thought long and hard about Berkman. If he had been in the RF slot I would have picked him without a second thought. However, he's just not a centerfielder.

Does anyone realize that Andruw Jones has been in the league almost seven years now, and he's only 25! He shouldn't even reach his peak for a couple more seasons. Plus, he really is the best center fielder there ever was. According to Win Shares he's already had (don't have the book in front of me) something like 3 of the top 20 defensive seasons by an outfielder ever. He leads the league in defensive win shares by an outfielder by 2 or 3 WS every year. That's like winning the batting title by 40 points every year.
Also, does anyone else think Darin Erstad has gotten more mileage out of one huge fluke season than any player since Norm Cash? Anyone else notice that three of the last four years Erstad has hit like a 12 year old girl? Except for that one good year, he hasn't had an OPS over .721 since 1998. There are eight Baltimore Orioles with 50 or more at bats with higher OPSes than Darin Erstad. He just signed a how many year contract for how much money? Because of cases like this I feel very, very little pity for any owner who cries that he's one the verge of bankruptcy. There tons of major league outfielders as good as or better than Darin Erstad making the ML minimum. To pay millions a year for one is unconscionable.

Edmonds just because of his kamikaze style. It's like NASCAR, I keep waiting for the big wreck.
