Who would you take: Catchers

I'm starting a series of polls with this catcher vote. This is NOT asking who is the best, rather it's asking who you would want to fill the position with if you were building your own team. Think of the whole game and who you are going to have at other positions as well....

NEXT POLL: First Basemen.

Michael Barrett... I would take him because he right now is as good as many of the catchers up there, and still has potential to further improve.

Josh Phelps... the kid will be hitting 40 HR soon. Mark my words. Of course by then he'll go the Delgado route and become a 1B.

I'd take the 2002 Piazza over those guys anyway. An .880 OPS playing in Shea stadium at a position where defense is overrated? Sign me up.

then i'll wait to see who i can choose for the other positions.

I love Varitek, Lieberthal, Johnson, and Rodriguez, but they're all 30 years old or older, which isn't good at any position, especially catching. I'd love to see all 4 of those guys have 5 or more great years in the league but I wouldn't bet money on it.

I wonder who the next great catcher is going to be if those guys follow normal aging patterns. Piazza is in his decline years, too. Might we be seeing another late 80's/early 90's "Terry Steinbach on the all-star team every year" period?

I voted for I-Rod.

BTW, it was a good idea to forget Posada.

I would choose I-Rod. I would've gone with veritek Because of his defense and how he handles the pitching staff. But he looks like he brings more of a slap hitters aproach to the plate, he's a big guy and I think he could hit for power.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

Josh Phelps will probably never catch in the big leagues...1b or DH would be my guess

Without a doubt Mike Piazza. But not even putting A.J. Pierzynski on the list. He was on the all-star team, is batting over .300, and has the best average among everyday catchers.

Mike Piazza because I picked Phelps as my 1b choice. There is no way he will play catcher anymore and the Blue Jays have essentially stated as much. In fact just look at Carlos Delgado. He too was their top stud catching prospect at one time but rather than risk ruining his knees they converted him to 1b. Plus the Jays prefer the game-calling and defense of another catching prospect in their minors but his name escapes me at the moment.
