Larry Bowa good?

I'm starting to wonder if Bowa might be a better manager than people give him credit for.

Phillies under Francona:

.420
.463
.475
.401

Under Bowa:

.531
.497
.531
.531

So far under Manuel:

.455

Obviously there are sample size issues with Manuel (33 games), but things don't seem very promising.

He was a better manager than people gave him credit for that's for sure, I really didn't think he should have been fired as I believe the problems facing that organization start much higher up. On top of that, the team he had was about the softest team I've ever seen, It was like everytime Dad (Bowa) yelled at them they ran and cried to Mom (Ed Wade, newspaper writers, etc.). It was kind of pathetic seeing it all transpire over the last few years.

Was Larry Bowa a good manager?

I'd say so.

Was he the best?

Probably not but he was very good.

But that's better than losing 53% of your games. In fact, that's better than Francona or Manuel was able to do. Clearly Bowa is the best man for the job.

In this case it's the difference between a winning season and a losing season.

True, a good point. But dont you think a team with as much talent those phillies had would be considered a bust if only winning 53% of your game 3 outta 4 years? Thats like the Sox only winning 53% of there games or somthing...would be considered a bust by many...

We need to get a Jim Tracy/Joe Morgan round table discussion going.

Good manager but hamstrung by the fact that eventually he gets everyone pissed off at him.

The Phillies so called "talent" is a group of the most overrated players in baseball, outside of maybe the Yankees and Mets (until this year for the mets).

You'd think wouldn't you but no one else has yet shown that they can do better. Maybe Bowa was overachieving and fans like GR will soon be clamoring for the good ol' days when Bowa was the manager and they at least had hope.

I'm one of those clamoring fans, actually I never wanted him fired. The team is filled with inconsistent, mentally weak, sissy's. I say keep Rollins, Abreu, Utley, Myers and Lieber and destroy the rest of the team.

The Phillies are basically the 60's Cubs. 2 MVP quality players, an all star quality player (Rollins), 6 giant holes in the lineup, and no pitching.

If Ed Wade weren't totally useless, imagine the lineup they'd be putting on the field.

Johnny Estrada
Ryan Howard
Chase Utley
Jimmy Rollins
Scott Rolen
Pat Burrell
Jason Michaels
Bobby Abreu

Even with the **** pitching they have (granted, it looks like Myers is starting to mature) that would be a hell of a team.
