Learning a New Pos.: Catcher

From experience I know that a player will pick up a fielding rating after playing a new position for a period of time, but what about C? I'm trying to get one of my minor leaguers to learn the position, but his "C Ability" and "C Arm" are rated as "-". Will these eventually receive ratings after tiem, or do I have to go in and appoint him ratings?

He should ultimately gain ratings. But, sometimes it never happens, and often takes a very long time for catching skill.
