Getting fired

I became the GM of the Atlanta Braves at the start of the 2008 season. They were awful the year before, the worst team in the league, and have absolutely no money available for signings. They also had the worst minor leagues in the MLB.

By the time the season started, the ML team was still awful, but we now had the best minor league system in baseball (I found some guys overseas, and made some smart trades).

I got fired in July. I had no chance to win. I don't get it.

I got frustrated, so I decided I'll play in commissioner mode and remain the GM of the Braves. However, after simming one day, everything changed. I had a few great prospects up with the big club, and these guys weren't only send down to AAA, but designated for assignment. The 3rd, 15th, and 25th prospects in the entire league were put on waivers!!

I just forced the game to quit, so none of this was saved. But, on my manager homepage, everything says that I'm the one making changes, yet the AI manager still makes the changes. How can I make this stop? Thanks!

I believe in commissioner mode you need to set the act as to the team you want to make changes on.

You need to play in comish mode but still get hired by the team (commishes are offered every job in the league so it's not a problem). Make sure you are the GM (hired) and not acting as. Acting as only allowes you to make changes that the computer can override the second your sim.

Just wondering what was your record before getting hired as the GM of Atlanta?

I don't remember exactly...I was the GM of the Yankees for 1/2 a season before getting fired from them in a similar situation. These AI owners want you to take over an awful team, allow you to go get zero players, and play .500 ball. Maybe some of you guys out there can do it, but I can't.

Thanks for the help though, that must be what happened!

True and another problem that I've notice on these boards is it seems that if your overall record is below .500 the computer have a very quick trigger finger, not even allowing you time to build a team.

Yeah, this is why I now do as you have said, zekester. I am the commissioner and I "hired myself" as the GM of my team. I've been successful recently, so I cannot tell for sure whether it's my rank or my record, but there has not been a pink slip for me in quite a few years now. Even if, I will just "hire myself" again. The firing bit is realistic and I am not criticizing it, but I would not want to be in Mattymo's situation any more.

If your still in comish mode, I belive it's impossible to get fired. The only thing I think is unrealistic about the firing prosses is if you take over a bad team with a Carrer losing record your not given a couple of seasons to turn it around, your pretty much under the gun from day 1, and trying to build a winning record in the minors with all the roster moves is also near imposible and really really frustrating becuse you need to update your line-ups on almost a daily bases.

Yes, that was exactly my experience! That's what happened to me in the minors, roster moves and all, and in that situation the cards are stacked against you for that reason alone; the AI seems to cope better than the human with all the changes. Then what happens is your career won/loss record being held against you and you get fired faster and faster; I think mid-May was my record and the final straw for me. That's when I moved up to ML GM and locked myself in as commissioner.

The manager firing mode is a good idea, as it lends realism and a stiff challenge to the game. I'm not even sure whether I would change it at all, making it easier to hold on or to start over in another organization without a cloud over your head. It's just that you need to sacrifice some realism if you want to build and manage an organization over time, through the ups and the downs. Though some real life manager examples can be found (Bobby Cox?), that's certainly not the norm these days in MLB.

That's why I say that I'm not criticizing this aspect of the game. It's just not for me any more.
