I watched all those Rocky movies and never realized that they were based on a true story. Maybe I missed it in the opening or closing credits or just don't remember now. Anyway, the character of Rocky is based on real life boxer Chuck Wepner, according to this:

Last I heard Wepner had sued a couple of times but lost.

It mentions in there that Stallone and Wepner settled their latest lawsuit in August for an undisclosed amount. Which means Wepner got quite a few $$$, which is only fair, I'd say.

It's pretty cool that an unknown guy like Wepner was the only fighter to knock Ali down while Ali was the heavyweight champion.
