Looking for some feedback!

So im starting a new league, and thats about all I have figured out for now. I have 8-10 friends who will be playing as well, so I need some feedback on some things.

Would it be best, in your expert opinions, to create a fictional custom 12-16 team league, and keep it as a friends only kind of thing for now, then expand if we feel the need to do so? Or should we make it a full league and try recruiting the extra owners? I dont think it will be a heavy participation point league, atleast not at this point in time. So my thinking is it might be more competitive, with everyone in the league knowing each other personally and wanting to compete against each other, if we kept the league small and close knit and more as a friends thing.

Other then that the other thing Id like to know is if we should allow it to be more personalized, with individuals being able to choose their own team names and cities and stadiums and such, as compared to using typical MLB namesakes.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated, I want to make this as fun as possible for all of us, and have a great time, so I really am thankful for anything you guys throw at me! Thanks!

The PFBL started in Aug '02 with just 12 fictional teams (four 3-team divisions). We took things slow, then expanded to 14 teams after 7 seasons, then to 16 teams after our 9th season. Now about to enter our 19th season, our league is stronger now than ever in terms of ownership.

We haven't expanded past 16 teams however, as we've found that to be the optimum in terms of keeping owners and being competitive. Your mileage may vary.

If I were you, I'd start with a low number of teams, see how things go, work out the kinks, etc.

You can always expand later if you want to.

Is it best in your opinion to use fictional players in this kind of an environment, using 12-16 teams?

What other modifiers do you think are wise to use or not use with said number of owners?

I'm not saying you should go fictional or not. Our league has always used fictional players is all I'm saying. I don't see any reason why real players wouldn't work instead though. I mean, it's really up to you and the owners in your league to decide what type of players you want. My personal preference is fictional, because I don't want to have any pre-conceived notions as to what players "should" be good or not.

Our league has tuned and fine-tuned lots of items over the past 4+ years and right now we're pretty happy with our current setup. For reference's sake, feel free to have a look at our league's rulebook for any ideas as to how to set up your league:
