Joe Niekro has passed away.
I remember Joe rooting his brother on during his 300th win.
I watched that game as a kid, and saw it recently on ESPN classic. I had a different username, but forgot the password. Just letting you guys know. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2641235

Wow. My friend and I were just talking this past week about the time that he got caught using an emery board on the mound (on the ball, not his nails) and he tried to throw it away when the umpire told him to empty his pockets. We were discussing something and it came up, "who was the guy who . . ." We searched the Internet until we could say, "oh yeah, Joe Niekro, right" and chuckle over it. Now this. Really sad.

Wow!
I would have thought Phil would be the first to go. Back in 1980, he was part of a pretty great pitching staff (Nolan Ryan, JR Richard and Joe Niekro). I remember pretending to be him when I was 7 years old, throwing a tennis ball against my house in Humble, Texas.
