Michael Schumacher retiring from racing after this season

Just heard it in the post-race interviews after he won the Italian Grand Prix. Very emotional. It'll be hard to imagine Formula 1 without him.

Couldnt agree more. Is it confirmed that Raikkonen is replacing Schumy or do we have to wait for the off-season driver shuffle. Couldnt have been happier to see Alonsos engine let go.

Pity, I love Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. At least after Italy he's looking good for the title this year, although I disagree with the penalty that pretty much destroyed Alonso's weekend before it started.

I'm glad Ferrari signed Kimi, he's always been very quick and I think he'll really shine on a team that produces reliable cars. With Alonso's move to Mclaren next year and Kovalainen being a race-rookie I wouldn't be surprised if Kimi won the WDC his first time out with them.

2007 is going to have Kimi/Massa at Ferrari, Fisico/Kovalainen at Renault, and Alonso/? at Mclaren (they may have announced a second driver, or they might be keeping De La Rosa, but I don't remember).

The penalty was pretty much moot, his engine gave way down the stretch.

F1 without Schumacher will be like peeing pain free after a 15 year bout of crippling cystitis.

Good riddance to the odious little cheat. I'm finding it hilarious that it seems Ferrari have done his legs and basically forced him to retire. HAHA! Couldn't happen to nicer person. The fact he's retiring when it seems this year the drivers have finally had enough of all his crap is just the icing on top.

He's a lousy sportsman, and both myself and the many F1 fans I know will remember him not for his meaningless records, but for all the times he cheated, politicked, lied, and put other drivers lives in danger by his on-track behaviour.

The guy is the worst example of a sportsman to ever sit in an F1 car, and F1 will be IMMEASURABLY BETTER for his absence from it.

When judgment day comes, I only hope that Jim Clark is there to give the righteous kicking he so richly deserves.

I've been a fan of F1 for over 20 years, and I had a celebratory meal and drink tonight to celebrate his departure from the sport he has tarnished so badly, starting with Adelaide in 1994. I'm really hoping all his "fans" bugger off as well, since it'll be nice to have the sport back, and not have a bunch of mindless sheep cheering for the biggest cheat to ever sit in a race car.

Not really a big formula 1 fan the last few years as the races are on Sunday's and the last few year's I work Sunday's so kind of lost touch, the lying I would put to him accidently hitting drivers and always saying it was an accident.

I gotcha. I'd assume politicking might have something to do with habitually getting into "accidents" and somehow convincing F1 that they are all unintentional.

By being significantly better than everyone else.

Wow. What a sore loser this guy is. There is really no such thing as cheating in Formula 1. I mean sure you can sabotage another person's car, but I am not sure he has ever done that. He is just better than whoever you like and you can't handle it.

You can also add would he have been as good as he is and won all those championships if he had driven for someone like Jordan or Minardi my guess is no, that's why I never get into the who's better than who argument in motorsports as a great deal of it as to depend on who your driving for.

This is very true. I know from other motorsports that the driver is maybe responsible for 1/3 of the results; there is pit crew and engine team at play too.

Is Schumacher the one that has all the crazy suspension stuff put into his steering wheel? I know there was one F1 driver that had the system put in so he could adjust the stiffness of his springs for every turn on the course.

He won 2 championships at Benetton in a car that was inferior to the Williams, and it's arguable that Mclaren and Williams had equal if not better cars during several of his titles at Ferrari. 2001 is the only championship year where I'd argue that Ferrari had a vastly superior car, and Williams still had them beat on horsepower.

F1 drivers can adjust brake bias, differential settings, rev limiter, and traction control from the cockpit. AFAIK there isn't a way to electronically alter suspension settings in the post-active suspension era.

Someone who follows formula 1 more than me will have to confirm but wasn't one of the Benetton wins when he took Hill out ?
