ARod vs Shaq
They both have mega bloated contracts. They both play in media centers. They both play(ed) for historic franchises. One is loved and cheered. The other resented and booed. Does anyone have any ideas why this is so?

First you'll have to say which one is cheered. Last i heard both aren't too well loved.

Shaq came through when it counted, and gave his city championships. ARod hasn't, and he plays for the team that demands the championships the most.
Also, ARod's personality wavers between trying-to-hard and reclusive, while Shaq is personable and mildly humorous. And finally, Shaq isn't nearly as overpayed as ARod is.

I think it's because Shaq doesn't look too smart.

I think that Shaq also has the Terry Bradshaw thing going for him, he is willing to laugh at himself.

Shaq's just a big loveable guy. He doesn't take himself to serious(cd's, movies, etc). He makes people laugh, both at him and with him.
Arod takes hismelf far to serious. Every comment about him, from the biggest idiot that calls talk shows to top scout, he listens to and disects and lets affect him. If he could only block that stuff out, or at least not pay as much attention to it, he'd be in far better form. In the clutch situations I almost wonder if while hes in the on deck circle he's sitting there wondering what people will say if he blows the at bat, and that gets in his head and he strikes out. |

I have no idea. But to me Shaq is an irrepressible media-hog who has a hero complex exacerbated by a lifetime of praise from people he thinks he's smarter than but are actually much smarter than him and a longing for a career in law enforcement and A-Rod is a prudish Playgirl model that likes to make fancy poses. I don't think it matters what franchises they played for.

You all have it wrong. It's because Shaq can act and ARod can't. Sheesh. How can you not see that? It's so obvious.

I am a huge fan of Shaq. He's actually one of my favorite sports personalities for the reasons stated above: he's able to laugh at himself. Yes, he says some weird, weird things sometimes (that press conference during last year's Finals, for example, where he started talking about how he was a member of an alien race), but that's part of the fun as well. I think a lot of this is just that people love to hate the stars on other teams. Or their teams, for that matter, if the team as a whole isn't performing to expectations. Ted Williams was absolutely reviled when he was playing, and not just by people outside of Boston either. I, of course, hated Stockton and Malone, but I had good reasons to do so.
