IMO, Johan has been the best player in the American League in 2 of the past three seasons.

dola,

But you could make an excellent argument that Santana isn't even the best player on his own team.

Nick Swisher has batted .186 with runners in scoring position this year. At least he chokes consistently, as his RISP averages were .219 and .200 the previous two seasons.

dola,

Rangers SS Michael Young has batted .415 w/RISP in 2006, and posted figures of .368 and .342 the previous two seasons. We love ya, Mike!

What warrants Curtis Granderson's inclusion on the list?

To me it's a no brainer. Derek Jeter. Not a Yankee fan. Not a DJ fan. But I've been on the Jeet-train all year. He's played great and helped keep the Yankees head above water when everuone was counting them out. Everyone sat back and mocked them and their high payroll and all the "experts" and "fans" said they would miss the playoffs this year in June. Considering all of the injuries they've battled through, a slumping A-Rod, an OF comprised of mostly replacement players all season... a banged up rotation. This season is a huge credit to Jeter, Giambi, Mussina and Mo for holding that team together. Since Jeter has played the best of the four I'd easily cast my ballot for him.

Any one of Hafner, Jeter, or Mauer for me. Santana, maybe, though I'm still wary of giving the award to a pitcher.

He's created more runs than Mauer, has a higher OPS than Mauer (barely; .936 to .934), driven in more runs than Mauer.

Yeah... though you could argue that catcher is the most demanding position so he's contributing a lot there too. Both are very worthy though.

P.S. Joe Mauer is sexy!

Its apparent hes taking a player from most of the best teams like Adrian Gonzalez and Papelbon/Ortiz thought Guillen would have been a better choice.

Very true, but take Mauer out of the lineup and we have a very solid defensive backup in Mike Redmond who is hitting .343 as a backup. We don't have another 1B with near the bat of Morneau.

Some may argue against him, but his exclusion from the list is surprising.

Oh and by the way, Big Hurt is a better Oakland option than Swisher.

I don't see how that should count against Mauer (or for Morneau). IMO, Mauer has been the better hitter (not as much power, but gets on base a lot more), while playing great defense at the most demanding defensive position on the diamond.
