Total Rookie Needs a Helping Hand

My neighbor swears by OOTP4, so I finally broke down and bought it yesterday. And I can tell I will soon be quite addicted to this new toy.

What I'd like to do is use the real players from today and start playing a career mode. Eventually, I know I'll be devoting my time to online leagues, but I know I've got to mess around on my own for a while till I'm ready for that.

The fictional player names drive me crazy, that much I know. I hear my neighbor talking about how they use real players and how neat it all is, so I'm looking through the online FAQ here trying to figure out what the heck to do and I found it all a bit overwhelming.

Can anyone out there explain what steps I need to take to get rolling here? I'm looking to start with a) real players from today and b) with all the current Record Book, Hall of Fame, etc stuff already in place. I'm not really interested in going back in time and replaying old seasons.

I hope I've given enough details, but if I haven't, let me know what I'm missing and I'll fill in the blanks.

Also, are there any other add-ons I need to download to make things as real as possible before I begin my OOTP career?
