MNF Announcers

So far the seem to be more worried about sounding smooth and ESPNish than informative or entertaining.

Why is Kornheiser there??

Why is Tirico speaking in that weird announcer way??

Is this really an improvement?

I'm holding off from making a final decision, but some observations based on the past:

1. Kornheiser, if he isn't doing PTI schtick, is True Talent. I believe they are trying to create a modern Howard Cosell (Take 2 after the Dennis Miller debacle) and don't expect him to do much more than make occasional comments

2. Joe Theismann has never been a good color analyst IMO. A step down from Madden (and I've not been a Madden fan for a decade now)

3. Tirico seems to lead a charmed life. Overrated as a PBP guy, he is the case study for announcers who try to make EVERY play sound like the most exciting play ever.

Two out of three ain't bad, except in this case it is two bad against one potential positive that really won't shape much of the broadcast.

Tirico is okay for golf, but Ive always hated him doing football. Kornheiser is going to be okay. He's been saying for months how nervous he is about tonight.

It's their preseason, too, so I'm not putting much stock into tonight. I think Tony is doing well, though. And I've never like Theissman, so that's not going to change. I guess it will come down to how they can make it flow, and how entertaining Tony can be without going into goofy-mode.

Is it too early to call for Aaron Brooks to be benched?

Yes. You can call that in Week 17.

The guy, who I happen to like, but I hear this the most about is Gary Thorne. Frankly, with Thorne I just think that's his voice. I don't think it's an effort, it's just him.

The Fred Smoot/Michelle Trafoya interview was classic. Two people speaking two different languages. Why bother asking if he wont answer?

Tirico is good. Tony is TT all the way. I block out the rest of the team in the booth.

They all Good.
Could have team Mike Patrick,Paul MaGuire back with Joe after Al Michaels went to NBC with John Madden.

I can't wait until Tony and Theisman have to fight for air time. You know Theisman can't stand anybody taking his air time.

I can't stand Kornheiser. Hated his radio show and I can't even watch PTI when he's on it. The best PTI is when he's on vacation. He's obnoxious and rarely funny. I don't give him much credit for sports knowledge, either.

I like Tirico when he does golf and basketball, so I'm willing to give him a chance. Theisman might be alright without Maguire and Patrick there. At least that's what I hope. Otherwise MNF broadcasts will be as painful as the Sunday night games were in the past.

Nah. Kornheiser can be excellent. I can understand not liking his PTI schtick - it is annoying - but that is all facade. If you don't credit him with much sports knowledge, you're dead wrong. I think he likes to play the "bumbling, I don't know anything" role, but I've read Kornheiser for years and I think he can be really insightful and on the mark. But, I guess to each their own.

As for Theismann, he was half of what was wrong with Sunday Night Football (Maguire being the other half). Patrick, when he stuck to PbP, was passable and I hope the same will be true of Tirico. Between Paul's "let me tell you" or "look at this" ranting and Joe's fifty "I spoke to [insert name] yesterday and..." or 75%+ incorrect appraisal of the action "they'll run here [as the team drops for a pass]" SNF was a nightmare.

I think Theismann is bad enough to make even a decent Tirico and a top-notch Kornheiser hard to listen to. Maybe I'll learn to tune him out.

Love Kornheiser. Love PTI too. I'm looking forward to this season's MNF.

I've never read him, but I would occasionally listen to his radio show years ago and every now and then catch PTI. I was unaware that he was playing a character. If he does have genuine insight, then I wish he'd display that more often. His TV/Radio gimmick doesn't work for him.

I agree with most of that, but Patrick killed me, too. ESPN then put Patrick with Dick Vitale on college games and I'm pretty sure I almost killed myself that night. Patrick isn't too bad at just describing the action, but he seems incapable of doing just that.
