Unhappy Help with New Backup Features!

One of the new features I overlooked in the 4.1 readme file was the fact that backups now include box scores and news reports. Well, I am overlooking that feature no more.

I have a 110 year old league. Due to frequent and random illegal operations errors, I have to backup my game about 5 times a season. Tonight, I ran the backup feature twice. Both times, it took nearly 40 minutes to complete. Is there any way to disable the backup of box scores and news reports? I simply cannot continue to play a game that is going to require 2-3 hours of down time for every season I play.

I'm caught in a catch-22 - play without backing up my game and lose portions of my season when the inevitable IO error occurs (or worse yet, lose my entire game if an IO error occurs while proceeding to the next season), or take up half of my playing time sitting around while the game backs up all of those files.

Can I delete all of those unnecessary files to prevent them from being backed up? Can anyone help me?

I would say to just remove that folder and try it. Not sure it would work, but might since it wouldn't be in the league folder any longer.

Deleting the box scores and logs isn't a problem. Deleting the player histories is, since I would lose that feature, in essence. I guess I can manually go in and delete the player histories of retired players, but I'd kinda like to keep those around for when I browse through the geezers and see who they played with, when they got traded, etc.

Getting rid of the boxes/logs will cut down a bit of the back up time, but having thousands of player history files to back up every time is still going to take at least 10 minutes, by my rough estimate. It would be great if backing up anything but the basics could be an option in the future. I know that most people don't sim as many seasons as me, but I'd think that even a 25-30 year career would take quite a long time to back up, at least compared to the 20 seconds we were used to before.

I mention to Markus maybe having a checklist kinda thing that you can select what to backup and what not to.

The only problem with not backing up player history is if you sim ahead and then go and restore your backed-up file the histories will be messed up.

I think I understand what you are saying.

I guess the bottom line for me is, I'd rather have update 4.1 with this one feature deleted, as it's causing me problems! I back up my game after each "segment" (free agency, amateur draft, spring training, all-star break, etc.) because of IO error issues that have ruined a number of games in the past. And it's saved me several times on my current game. So I have to do it, but I don't want to either spend too much time backing up instead of playing or deleting files to decrease the time of the back up that causes issues.

For the moment, I've deleted the boxes/logs and I'll go forward with the player histories in tact. We'll see how that works.

IIRC, you can duplicate a the back up/restore feature by copying files in your league folder and "pasting" it into a new folder. may be even easier to right click on the folder and click on 'zip to [league folder name].zip since it will compress the files.

Exactly - you can do it all within Windows Explorer. The game feature of backing up the entire league is great for folks unfamilair with winzip or windows explorer but to make the process much faster (and safer & smaller) use winzip to zip up the entire league folder. Give the zip file a unique name so you can easily find it when you need to and so you don't accidently over write it (example: "YourLeagueName_1967FINAL.ZIP").

Giving users the option of what to back up may cause further improper league backup problems so I actually hope this is not changed. Also, if there is an option for what to back up the backup process may take even longer, as then the game will likely need to flush the contents of the Backup folder before backing up the selected league - currently I think it just overwrites the older backup files.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try this instead. 35-40 minute backups suck.

to further the thoughts above:

I have found that I use the backup feature many, many times within a season and use the "manual" method of backing up the files (windows explorer and winzip) of the entire league structure at crutial periods such as end of season before proceeding.

I noticed the increased time to do the backup but with my machine it took about 1-2 minutes instead of 10 seconds. Haven't had to restore yet but hear your pain.
