Depth Charts

I don't know how these work... I mean the basics are pretty simple, this guy plays if the starter is tired, blah blah...

Does this work, or does it just confuse the computer?
I have a starting 2B, and a starting 3B.
I have a back up that can play 2B, and one that can play 3B, but neither can play both.
The starting 3B can play 2B, and is a far better hitter than the back up that can play 2B.

So what I've been doing, is setting it so the starting 3B will play 2B if the starting 2B is tired, and setting the backup 3B starting if the starting 3B is tired.
What I figure it should do is: if the starting 2B is tired, the normal starting 3B will play 2B and the backup 3B will start at 3B.

Does that work? Or does it confuse the AI and it'll instead start my closer at 2B?

You're so funny. While I don't anticipate it will do any less or more than you expect it to - aside from surprises with the batting order assignment which, IIRC, is still locked even in the event of these positional changes, we'll just have to wait on your report to tell us how it went.

and how many errors the closer committed at third.

Did I imagine it, or did 6.5 have more common sense here, and put your non-hitting sub lower in the order, shifting everyone else up one position?

6.5 was smarter about that. Even v5 usually slightly rearranged my batting order when giving regulars days off, just checking real quick in my online league now.

I'd be really shocked if 2006 didn't do that.

Pretty sure it doesn't, on the brief actual managing (rather than long simming) I've done.

It does seem to have some intelligence.

My catcher took a day off, he's usually the number 2 hitter.
It moved my normal number 7 hitter to the 2 slot, and put my backup catcher in the number 7 slot.

Just another example of the change:
My normal 2B and CF took a day off.
Normally my CF bats 1st, 2B bats 6th, LF bats 7th
It put my replacement 2B batting 7th, replacement CF batting 6th, and moved the LF to 1st.

I would have set it up the same... although I wouldn't have been happy having those two replacements in at the same time... they both suck too bad.

That's reassuring then; I had seen my starting #2/2B replaced by a good defensive, but poor hitting, player who was left at #2.

Just classic manager strategy. No player is too bad to hit in the #2 hole, because the prevailing wisdom is that the #2 hole needs "bat control". The bat doesn't necessarily have to come into solid contact with the ball.
