Foreign players
OK here is the scenario I am looking to implement.
My universe will start in 1931. For the first 14 years of the main league, which is going to be set in the South Carolina all of the players will be Americans with 31% of them being born in South Carolina, and smaller percentages neighboring states down to a 1% of them being born elsewhere in the US. Then starting in 1946 I would like to start changing the percentages slowly over time to be more equivalent to what the modern major leagues are as far as percentages of American players born in each individual state. Also in 1946 I would like to start permitting foreign ball players to enter the league. But I want to be able to adjust this from a start of just 1% from Canada and Mexico to a yet to be determined % that includes all of North and South American countries. 1: Is this possible? 2: If it is possible what files would I need to backup and modify to make it happen? I already understand that if it is possible I will be modifying the files whenever I wanted the percentages to change. |

Part of the issue is that you cannot control the % of players that are generated from certain states, or even countries specifically. Unfortunately, I have so many jillions of threads to look at right now, I can't quite get my brain around how to do this. But it would certainly involve roster exports and imports and modifications to the nations and cities files... Sorry I couldn't bring better news.

Modifying nations and cities files will not change anything. The game uses that data exactly once, when you create the universe. Any changes made in those files will only be seen if you create a NEW universe. I know because I've been toying with it. I've posted a request to make this more flexible.

...And what did you eat..
Just before this scheme came to you!
Gotta admit, that's a unique approach to league building. Steve

How this idea was hatched
Quote:
Well this scheme came to me almost a year ago now. I live just outside of Columbia SC and was reading the local newspaper where they had an article on the old textile mill leagues that were quite popular around the turn of the century, 19th to 20th that is, in South Carolina. I got very curious about them since I am a baseball geek at heart. In the course of my inquisitiveness I thought "what if the Black Sox scandal would have turned up the kind of rampant gambling that the steroids scandal might be turning up". The next logical question was "what if MLB as it was in the 1920's would have collasped under the weight of the scandal, and could the old textile mill leagues have continued and become the real major leagues here in the state?" Hence my dream of a fictional league that is based in South Carolina was born. Since then I have tinkered with the idea and deviated just a bit, there still will be no team that ever will play in a stadium outside of the state of South Carolina, but I still want the league to start as a regional league, hence the percentage of players from the SE states making up 99% of the original teams, in a post Black Sox time frame where the scandal destroyed the major leagues. Then over time this percentage will diminish a bit as players from other areas start flocking to the Carolina Mill Leauge because of it's quality of play. My original post kinda shows where I am going with the player pool. I already have schedules thanks to the way the XML schedules were made, I already have a financial model I am going to work with and I already have cities/towns/communities chosen for the 16 team ML and all of it's minor leagues (AAA down through Rookie ball). What I don't have is a league history of players and that is what I am hoping to do by simming seasons starting in 1931 and continuing through 2005. I figure 75 years of computer simmed games will give the league a rich history that I can use as a selling point if I decide to take the league online later. |

If the nations and cities files are only used once at league creation as stated elsewhere in this thread then I might have to scrap the idea of foreign players being introduced in 1946 and just edit the cities file as needed then leave the percentages as they are at creation time. |
