Hockey Hall of Fame closes, considers new location

Quote:
EVELETH, Minn. (AP) -- The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, a shrine for stars from all levels of American hockey the past three decades, has closed its doors.

The hall may move to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul or the Mall of America in Bloomington, although no decision has been made, officials said. The hall's closure was announced Friday.

Many college, Olympic and pro hockey greats have come from Eveleth, including John Mayasich, Willard Ikola and John Mariucci. A giant hockey stick stands downtown and police cars display the Hall of Fame logo.

The museum, which attracts about 10,000 visitors a year, has struggled since opening in 1972. It costs about $11,000 a month to keep it operating, said executive director Tom Sersha.
That's sad to see, although I never did get why a seperate Hall was needed

It's kind of sad. A small city want to attract tourists by investing on such a museum, but nobody is going out of their way to visit the city.

I've been to the Toronto one, never been to this one. They should move it to the Mall of America, that place gets a ton of tourists.

I went there when I was living in Duluth. It's really out of the way and I'm surprised it stayed open as long as it did.

Its too bad, Eveleth has a great hockey history. Its also a cool little museum for American hockey (lets face it, would you stupid canuck snobs have John Marriuci or other early americans in your hall?). Hopefully it ends up at the X-the best hockey arena in all the land run by a organization that understands the importance of hockey in the social and cultural fabric of minnesota.

The mall of america, on the other hand, would be an abomination. God I hate that place.

Yonge & Front. Much better than the old location, when it was at the CNE Grounds in a trailer or something. I barely remember it but I think I was at the old one once.

When the Forum closed down, I thought it would be nice to move it there, in the hockey shrine of all hockey shrines. But that didn't happen.

I think it's an entertainment complex, with arcades, movie theatres and such.

well more the atmosphere then anything. Friend of mine went there during the 1986 Montreal-Quebec City playoffs. Just amazing the passion of the fans (and for some, downright lunicy)

He's the one that the cathedral of college hockey known as Marriuci arena is named after.

U of M coach, olympian, basically the father of american hockey...

Coached the US silver medal team in 58. Played for the Blackhawks. 1977 Lester Patrick award winner. He started the trend of the "U" using almost exclusively Minnesota boys to beat the tar out of everyone else...except for ****ing Holy Cross (I just got to watch that game on my ipod on the flight home yesterday. Yeeeesh.)

Anyway, people like him are why we need the US hall of fame. That and the world largest hockey stick.
