ESPN Poll: Should Doug Flutie be in the Pro Football HOF?

What?

As far as I knew, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is/was intended to honor to great players of the NFL. I understand Doug Flutie had some great seasons in the CFL and was arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks in that league's history, but should that warrant him a place in Canton?

IMO, based solely on his NFL career, there's absolutely no way Doug Flutie is a HOF player.

No, he should not be in the PFHOF for his NFL career.

Now, if the PFHOF actually lived up to its own name, then yes. But as reality stands, no.

Of course Flutie's not a HoFer based on his NFL career.

The HoF website doesn't say anything, as far as I could tell, about including or not including non-NFL leagues. Does anyone know how Warren Moon's CFL career factored into his induction?

By your logic, bailey, should Negro League players be allowed in the National Baseball Hall Of Fame & Museum, since it is "intended" for great players that played in MLB?

I didn't put any of my logic into that. I was under the assumption that the PFHOF was intended only for NFL players. To each HOF their own.

(The basketball HOF, for example, I believe will induct people regardless of league -- not exclusive to the NBA. It's just a general Hall of Fame.)

Fluties stats smack of Vinny Testeverde and well, Vin-man certainly isn't a HOF'er.

Agree.

Is it the NFL HOF, or is it the Pro Football HOF?

I know the Hockey HOF includes players outside the NHL.

I think the Basketball HOF includes players from outside the NBA.

Anyone know if Cooperstown has players who didn't play in MLB? There's some Negro Leaguers in there but didn't they play at least some games in MLB?

And if that is the case, then Doug Flutie did play some games in the NFL.

There are some Negro Leaguers in Cooperstown who never played an inning of major league baseball but they seem to be the only exception. No Japanese Leaguers, no Mexican Leaguers, no Cuban Leaguers, no one inducted for their minor league careers, no one inducted solely on the basis of their pre-1876 careers, etc.

They were using Moon as an argument for why Flutie should be in because of the CFL stats Moon had. But Moon IIRC has the 3rd most passing yards ever in the NFL. IMO he didn't need his CFL stats to be figured in to make it though others argue against due to no championships and the era he played in.

How? (Unless you include the CFL)

In the NFL there wasn't any comparison:

Passing Yards: 45252 to 14715

Testaverde was a backup at times in his career but started quite a few game. Flutie was mostly just a backup. I'm no Testaverde fan but I can't compare Flutie's career to Vinnie's unless you compare TD/INT ratios or QB ratings. Certainly not career total numbers.

Actually... it is not the "National Football League" hall of fame... it is the "Pro Football" hall of fame. There was discussion about that on ESPN radio just a couple nights ago. By all accounts on what he has done over his 21 year career - yes, he should be there. But most doubt he'll get the chance since people tend to be blind to the CFL.

"

Warren Moon was a great NFL quarterback who put up ludicrous numbers in the run-n-shoot offense.
Flutie ? A great NFL backup quarterback.

No comparision, NFL wise, can be made between the two.
Flutie is not worthy of being enshrined in Canton, IMO.

If it's just the "Pro Football Hall of Fame" then a whole wack of CFLers should be in it.

Damon Allen (soon to be the all-time leader in all of pro football in passing yards) would be a shoe-in.

If Flutie...whose pro resume is almost entirely reliant on his CFL days, then also Damon Allen and, maybe even more obviously, Dieter Brock. Brock was one of the greatest of CFL passers -- and he even spent a year as a starter in the NFL ('85 LA Rams) and took his team (if you can call it that, in reality Eric Dickerson took them...) to that year's NFC Championship (you know Brock. The famous clip shown all the time. Soldier Field. Snow. Brock gets sacked, Marshall picks up the resulting fumble...Bears shuffle on into Super Bowl XX)

So, if Flutie deserves to get in, let's send Dieter, too!
