SQL Dump

An SQL dump, that is.

Will this provide an "in" for third party app makers to create cool utilities and reports and such?

what is an SQL dump? I never get into "extras" with OOTP, I simply play the game they give me (I've only used the Lahman database, but I've never even installed patches). I think in this version I want to get into other stuff a little more.

Markus has mentioned possibly creating a "dump" of raw data from the game database in a SQL format (structured query language, the language used by most relational databases like MySQL or *gasp* MS Access in some way or another).

This is attractive to third party mod-makers, because it gives them the ability to write utilities that actually look up game data. For example, in the past, Catobase worked sort of like this. Data was dumped out of OOTP, and Jeff Cato wrote a program that analyzed that data and turned it into cool historical reports.

Basically, SQL dump = more opportunities for clever people to write add-on utilities for the game.

I hope everyone here appreciates how good a man Steve is. He is the height of professionalism and honesty.

Pat him on the back. He deserves it.

I am very interested in taking a dump. I am trying to develop an app that will generate fictional player photos for an entire league, using a uniform template appropriate to the team they play for, and a face appropriate to their place of origin. Seeing how these values are stored in the database would really make it a lot easier for me to get a jump start on development (especially given that I do not plan on being finished for several weeks/a few months.)

I'd also be interested in developing some custom HTML reports that are heavily CSS-tagged so that the entire look and feel of them can be changed by changing a single CSS file (as well as simply adding weird random reports that no one other than me would ever want or use.)

That being said, don't try to force it too early. Just wait until you're good and ready, then take a deep breath, relax, and let database do its thing.

Why thank you. I'm quite enjoying the Wayne Middaugh avatar myself. (That is Middaugh, right? I haven't been able to watch much curling the past year or so and I'm starting to forget who everyone is.)

Courageous endeavour and outstanding ambition. Salutes. I'm hoping the game format coupled with your talents yields us one of the first of many remarkable tools I expect creative people like yourself to make available. With the feedback I've seen on the screen layouts, I'd reconciled myself to only using the circles IF I were able to access adequate numbers and quality of photos (and I have a huge bundle of existing .bmps). Hoping to put yours to work as soon as possible. Nothing enhances a fictional league more than photos to help you become familiar with the players.

Great luck on this venture. Thanks for planning to contribute so early in the process.
