Probably not relevant, but just in case...

A few years ago I downloaded a demo of one of the soccer-football management games. Let me write up front that I no longer remember which one it was, or even if the game I downloaded was the culprit, although I remember pretty clearly that my downloads folder indicated that this was by far the most likely cause.

What happened was that [probably] the soccer management game replaced the Windows Symbol font with a newer version which allowed it to display several things easier. The trouble was that other software on my system, bridge and poker online software which required the Symbol font for playing card suit symbols, now displayed information incorrectly.

I'm sure it is extremely unlikely, at best, that OOTP2006 will cause a problem like this. I can see that using specialized fonts may help with display issues. But it seems clear that the best solution is to create a specialized font instead of modifying a common Windows font, which may cause other problems. There's still time to do this before the release, in the unlikely scenario that it is a potential issue.

Whoever wrote that product you refer to was an idiot.

I would not worry about OOTP causing this problem. Markus is smarter then that.

True enough; on the other hand, one could make the argument that poker and bridge software relying on symbols from common fonts is theoretically risky when it is a simple matter to make a specialized font for suit symbols. If a program specifies a font by name, it cannot be sure that the user hasn't, for some reason, renamed a different font.

I'm sure he is. But he is inheriting a lot of code written by SI, to keep the look-and-feel similarities between their other sports management games. This extra code is probably a great benefit to Markus, allowing him to concentrate on the game engine more. I just hope someone can check that my problem is not going to be repeated. I have a backup of Symbol.ttf, but hope not to have to use it.

And once again, I should state that I am not even sure it was an SI demo that caused this: could easily have been something from the other guys....
