Chicks Dig the Long Ball
They say pitching and defense wins you championships. If you're a fan of the Colorado Rockies, you won't see much of that. The 2006 Colorado Rockies are, simply put, attempting to slug out every team this season. With a complete fantasy draft, the Rockies team has been molded to crush the ball, and crush it they shall. Let's take a look at the starting lineup:
1. The Pace Setter For RF Ichiro Suzuki, this will be a fun season. Hitting atop the Rockies powerful lineup, Suzuki has the ability to break the runs scored record of 192 by Billy Hamilton. Hell, he even has a chance to break his own hits record of 262. 2. The Utility Man Melvin Mora can officially play every base, but he will be playing 3B for the Rockies this season. With his great contact hitting, he will be counted on to push Ichiro into scoring position as much as possible. He also has the power to bring Ichiro home in one swing, as well. 3. The Legend LF Manny Ramirez was considered by many to be the best hitter in baseball, when he was in his prime. At 33 years old, Ramirez wants to prove that he can still hit with Pujols and company. With 436 career homeruns, Ramirez will need 53 homeruns per season to get to 700 in the next five years. It's possible. 4. The Lefty Every team needs a strong left handed hitter to complement their righties. For the Rockies, 1B Carlos Delgado will provide nightmares for opposing managers. Delgado is great protection for Manny Ramirez, and will certainly see his share of pitches to hit this season. 5. The Old Timer He's been around since 1988, and 450 homeruns later Gary Sheffield is still going strong. With the addition of the DH this year, Sheffield will get the opportunity to only worry about hitting. At 37 years old, Sheffield is the oldest of the bunch, but wants to show he can still hit with the rest of them. 6. The Comeback Kid Ken Griffey Jr. was the face of baseball for 10 years. He owned the American League during the 90's, but unfortunately saw his share of injuries tarnish what could have been the best career we've ever seen. Junior is 36, and will feel like a kid again roaming CF in Colorado. He has 536 career homeruns, and would certainly like to add to it. 7. Something to Prove At 32, Nomar Garciaparra has a chance to rebuild his name. He was the golden boy in Boston, but was shipped out after years of injuries and frustrations. He could have been the next Ted Williams in terms of popularity. Now playing SS for Colorado, Nomar wants to get his name back in the limelight, as one of the elite shortstops in the league. 8. The Leader He's been known to lead pitching staffs, but Jason Varitek can also carry a big stick. He'll have his work cut out for him managing the staff he is given in Colorado, but Tek will wear his C proudly on offense as well, hoping to hit his share of baseballs out of the park. 9. The Quiet One He was in Montreal and no one really knew who he was. 2B Jose Vidro won't get much attention in Colorado either, as he will be hitting 9th behind 8 big hitters. Vidro hopes he can shed the rep and earn the respect of his peers.

Everyone has good and bad days.
When you have an offense such as the Colorado Rockies, pitching is often overlooked. Such is the case for the 06 Rockies, as they completely ignored pitching until late in the draft. However, they were able to steal a few big names. Here is the staff that will look to hold opponents under 6 runs a game: SP- Curt Schilling SP- Mike Mussina SP- Esteban Loaiza SP- Miguel Batista SP- Seth McClung CL- Mariano Rivera MR- Jim Mecir MR- Neal Cotts MR- Esteban Yan MR- Kyle Grabowski MR- Will Ohman MR- Eric Milton

Diamondbacks at Rockies, Best of Three
Game 1: It Has Begun
The Colorado Rockies were able to start the season at home against Arizona, and gave the fans the show everyone was hoping for. Manny Ramirez's two-run shot in the first launched the assault, as the Rockies scored 13 runs on 18 hits, including five long balls from five seperate players. Curt Schilling goes 7 innings, allowing 2 runs and 3 hits. Final Score: Rockies 13, Diamondbacks 3 Longballs: M. Ramirez (1), C. Delgado (1), G. Sheffield (1), K. Griffey Jr. (1), Jason Varitek (1) Game 2: Pitching Wasn't Part of the Deal Just as easily as the Rockies scored on opening day, the Diamondbacks showed they had some life in their bats as well, beating the Rockies 10-3. Melvin Mora provided the pitching help with two errors at 3B, leading to four unearned runs. Carlos Delgado goes 3 for 4 in the loss, with two homeruns. Longballs: C. Delgado 2 (3) Game 3: Dramatic Ending Bottom 9, bases loaded, 2 outs. A 2-2 count with Manny Ramirez at the plate. Here's the pitch... strike three! Diamondbacks win 16-3. OK, it wasn't dramatic. It was painful; Brutally painful. Kevin Youkilis and Dave Roberts make me cry for this game to be over. On the plus side, Carlos Delgado homers again. On the negative side, Loaiza's 9 runs allowed in 5.2 innings wasn't exactly what we were looking for. Longballs: C. Delgado (4), G. Sheffield (2)

Rockies (1-2) at Padres (1-2), Best of Three
Game 4: Park Factors My Ass!
PetCo Park turned into Coors Field for a day, as we scored 6 runs on three homeruns in the first inning, and went on to hit six homeruns total in our 9-3 victory. Delgado homers for the fourth straight game, and Miguel Batista pitches a solid 7.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. Longballs: C. Delgado (5), M. Ramirez (2), J. Varitek (2), K. Griffey Jr. (2), M. Mora (1), N. Garciaparra (1) Game 5: Announcer Sets Record For Most Taunts in a Game "That sure looked like a close call, do you want to argue?" I should have said yes by the end of this game, because it was that bad. The Padres score 11 runs on 14 hits, as Curt Schilling gets cheered by Padre fans as he leaves in the 5th inning. Nomar Garciaparra hits a homerun, keeping the point of this dynasty alive. Longballs: N. Garciaparra (2) Game 6: ctrl + alt + delete (x2) The Chargers kick three field goals and beat the Broncos in a low scoring 9-3 affair. Mariano Rivera complains about playing time, and Manny Ramirez and Jason Varitek can officially go to hell. See below: Code:
Player AB Strikeouts Ratio Ramirez 27 9 3:1 Varitek 21 11 Slip Poison in his Oatmeal Carlos Delgado Complains of Back Acne Carlos Delgado homered in four straight games, hitting five total during the first week of the season. Not too shabby.
