Official Fightin' Phils Spring Training Thread

Oh yeah, if nothing else, the Phils will get first place for having the first official spring training thread here at OOTP.

It bugs me that you didn't call them the "Phightin' Phils."

I think if Schilling and Greene stay healthy and Mulholland keeps eating innings we'll do ok this year.

Is this thread about Philadelphia or Reading (or as Reading should be re-named "Official Beyotch of the Akron Aeros")?

I ran across the article linked below at a new baseball site that had been recommended, www.baseballtoaster.com

Phulphilling 2006?

by Mike Carminati

http://mikesrants.baseballtoaster.co...es/322024.html

"Then there's the Phils, who could have six pretty good starting position players but will have an offesive sinkhole at third and behind the plate as well as a continually sub-par rotation of number three and number four pitchers, and a closer who has been a setup man for four years."

There were too many "if"s in that article to leave a fan with much hope.

Well at least when the world ends in 2012, Dutch Daulton will be okee. It's a shame Mike Lieberthal can't say the same.

I thought this thread was going to be about crackpott. He has a tendancy to put "Phil" in his thread titles.

Really? If Jon Garland and Jose Contreras can figure it out. If Dustin Hermanson can stay healthy enough to close games. If Neal Cotts can finally show signs of being a major leaguer. If Orlando Hernandez can give anything. If Scott Podsednik isn't a 5th outfielder parading around as a leadoff hitter. If Tadahito Iguchi can adjust to the majors. If Jermaine Dye can bounce back from injuries. If AJ Pierzynski can bring stability to the catcher position.

I totally forgot until they mentioned it just now on Sportscenter that Jimmy Rollins finished last season on a 36-game hitting streak.

edit....he's hitless in his entire career on opening day and he's going to face Carpenter of St. Louis, by the way.

The thing is, GGH, knowing the Phils we'll all be using a different seven letter "F" word before their name starting in about late May or early June.

If we're lucky.

Are Phillies fans excited about having one of the best defensive CFs in baseball on the team?

It's a great idea considering we need someone to cover all the ground that Burrell and Abreu don't. It's a really great idea since we gave up Jim Thome to get Rowand.

Not much of a Phillies fan...but follow their ST pretty closely given where I live.

I am going to game next weekend against Venezuela. Probably gonna be a little weird for Abreu.

Also...my mother-in-laws car broke down right in front of Brighthouse Field last night. If you have ever been to Clearwater, then you know that Rt 19 is going through a major overhaul. There are no shoulders to speak of and so cars are screaming past us. I nearly got hit several times and I was just standing there waiting for tow truck. Anyhow as I am leaning up against barrier I see a baseball lying in the grass. It would be a HUGE shot (way over 500 ft) to hit where this ball was. Not to mention the fact that it would have to clear a retention creek. But....I couldn't help imagining Jim Thome parking one their last year from the practice field.

I saw 2 games last year, and will go to at least 2 this ST as well. Last year I saw Burrell park 2 to deep LF (almost same spot both times) against Reds.

Brighthouse Field is cool...definetly one of the better AAA parks.

Anyways that is about as much as I can say about phillies.

Now if we could just find a way to trade away David Bell for something that could be useful. I could live with Lieberthal being a black hole at #8 in the lineup, but it kinda sux to have the Bell/Lieberthal/Pitcher be the bottom third of the order.
