The Battle Of States

I have had this league going for awhile and just recently picked it back up to continue. I own the Eugene Emeralds. For some reason I had the urge to deal pretty much every veteran player I had that was worth a darn and field a team full of very young, still developing, but promising players. Its been exciting. Anyway, here goes.....

Positional Analysis - Catcher
8/16/2009

The team is set with Troy Stenberg behind the plate and there is little talent through the rest of the system. Stenberg has yet to reach the level most scouts felt he would but it looks like he is settling in as a .260/10/60 hitter with great defense. Last season Troy hit .282 with 5 homeruns and 54 RBI and this season he is hitting .267 with 6 homeruns and 53 RBI despite losing his job for 2 weeks due to disciplinary reasons.

22 year old Alden Cherba backs up Stenberg and many within the organization consider Cherba to be every bit as good as Stenberg, without the high ceiling that will likely never be reached. This season Cherba is hitting .288 with 0 homeruns and 11 RBI. Despite the few AB's and little power Alden has looked comfortable when handed the starting job.

Once you get past Cherba and Stenberg the outlook behind the plate is depressing. The only prospects worth mentioning, Hubertino Provenzano at Double-A and William Tousignant at Single-A, are considered to be backup candidats at best. Provenzano is hitting .231 with 2 homeruns and 18 RBI and at 24 years of age he needs to make a huge turnaround if he expects to see any action at the big league level.

Tousignant is an interesting case. At 20 years of age he already has a very good approach at the plate when it comes to discipline and taking walks. This season he is hitting .237 with 2 homeruns and 28 RBI with a .396 OBP. What sets Tousignant apart from most catching prospects is the fact that he has little power and is a very good base stealer.

The outlook is not good. Stenberg looks to be a backup on a very good team but will start in Eugene. His defense is valuable however so its not a total loss. If anything happens to Stenberg and Cherba the Emeralds are in deep trouble.
