Question regarding my idea for a dynasty...

Wow. I haven't visited this site in almost a year. I wonder if anyone remembers me. Anyway, my question is this:

I was considering a "dynasty" wherein Ty Cobb plays for a current-day team, as a rookie, for example, starting off in the minors in 2003. (I own OOTP5.) Is it possible to pluck a single player out of his regular timeline--making no other changes--and insert him into the 2003 draft/rosters?

Yep.

So how, pray tell, would I go about doing that, then?

Once you've got your league set up, go to "Free Agents" from the league drop-down menu. Then select "Import Player from Database." You'll need to know the Lahman ID of the player in question, but it's easy enough to get that from the database itself. (Just open up the sheet called "master" and it's in the second column from the left.)

The only problem with this is that your new player will enter the free agent pool rather than the draft. If you just want to assign him to a team, that's no worries - just have that team sign him. I don't know of a way to import an individual player and have him be draft-eligible. If I was going to try that I'd just use the workaround of taking an existing draft-eligible player and editing him to be the same as your imported guy.

I hope this makes some sense.

It makes sense, and I appreciate your help, but I'm still running into a problem:

After entering the player's Lahman #, it asks for an "import year." I wasn't sure what that was referring to, initially, so I inputted "2003," and that gave me a 100+ year-old Ty Cobb pitching relief. Next, I tried inputting "1905," and that brought Cobb in at 18, playing CF. BUT...his prospect rating is 1 star. My guess is that the rating is based on Cobb's stats his first year, which weren't so great. I brought him into the 2003 league of fictional players that comes with the game, didn't do a 2003 historical league. Is that what I need to do to get Cobb's ratings accurate? Start a 2003 historical league and choose the ratings to be based on his entire career? (or would it be remaining career?)

I don't know if that would work (though it sounds like it might), but you could always import him as a 25 year old (or whatever prime season you want), change his age to 18, and set his ratings to be his talents, and give him whatever actual ratings you feel would be appopriate for his eighteen year-old self.

No, you're probably going to have to edit him manually one way or the other if you want him to import as he was in 1905 - as a player with relatively low ratings but a spectacular potential. My recommendation (without testing to see how this would work) would be to import Cobb from some year a few seasons later - like 1908 or 1909, when he was already a superstar. Then, if you want him to be 18, edit his age and reduce his actual ratings. (I imagine his talent levels will be through the roof already if you import him from one of those years.)

The alternative would be to import 1905 Ty Cobb and raise all his talent ratings. There's no question that it takes a little work to get this right - for my solo league, I manually edit every single player that imports each year.
