Reds Signed Dunn To Two Year Deal

Adum Dunn and the Reds agreed to a two-year, $18.5 million deal, avoiding arbitration. Let the slugging (and whiffing) begin! Woo-Hoo!

Sorry G&GH.

Nice to see Wayne Krivsky taking care of important matters right away. I know he's a strikeout king, but Dunn's OBP and OPS numbers are nice. If we can sign 4 or 5 starting pitchers, we're in business.

To be fair, it's new management. Obviously the new GM knows what that OPS is worth.

We could have had him for Edwin Jackson.... We could have had him for Edwin Jackson.... We could have had him for Edwin Jackson......... *sigh*

It's not like you didn't get an amazing return him elsewhere.

Fixed that for you, as I don't think Wilson is necessarily overrated. He began last season as the opening day starter by default. He was simply the pick of a poor lot. Harang is showing some promise but Milton is the guilty offender here. He's going to have to learn how to induce ground balls this year if the Reds are going to improve.

I can't see any significant pitcher acquisition forthcoming, unless Kearns or Dunn are part of the deal.

Fixed that for ya

Nice work on the reds Front office to bad the f.o. wasnt in place for F.A. .Well maybe wilson will come back to 04 season form and harrang keeps imroving and claussen breaks out big time this season. It's tough being a reds fan sometimes but im more optimistic about this season than last year.

Yeah, I forgot about Pena!

Still too many 'ifs' for my comfort. I wish I had your optimism though. The Brewers and even the Pirates are starting to make strides, with the Reds just treading water it seems. Not sure Dave Williams is the best bang for the buck that we could have gotten for Casey. This could turn out to be a coup for Pittsburgh. A fitting last salvo of the O'Brien era.

Oh im not thinking were going to make a run at the cards or 'stros. But if the offense is the same as last season in that griff.stays healthy for most if not all I know big if considering griffey is maybe 1/2 the player he used to be. Maybe milton figures out how to keep the ball in the bark a little more who knows. But at least the front office seems to have some idea of what it will take to be competive .

Snipped this from BB Pro. And not to beat the dumb Konerko deal to death, but.......

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ar...articleid=4762

"Still, the new deal is a pretty good one for the team. They’ll get Dunn’s theoretical peak seasons, ages 26 through 28, for a total of $31 million, with no obligation to keep him as he moves past his peak to the wrong side of the compensation/productivity matrix. The deal illustrates the power of the rules that govern player movement; consider the contract signed by the older, less productive Paul Konerko this winter, worth $12 million a year for five years. Konerko was a free agent able to solicit work anywhere in the game, and as such, commanded a higher salary and a longer commitment than the more valuable Dunn. The ability to prevent competitive bidding for a player’s services for the first six years of his career is the single most valuable weapon in a team’s arsenal.

Running at this from another angle, take a look at Dunn’s PECOTA card. Nate Silver has developed a metric he calls Marginal Value Over Replacement Player (MORP). The number is the value a player will return, expressed as a dollar figure. Dunn is projected to return $38 million over the next three seasons, while making $31 million. The investment in him should be worth $7 million to the Reds in terms of his impact on their on-field performance. Konerko, on the other hand, is projected to return just $17.6 million over the life of his deal, making the investment a loss to the tune of more than $40 million. (White Sox fans will argue that signing Konerko was based on considerations other than performance. Those may be valid, but they’re not $40 million worth of valid.)"

Well, I agree that the Sox did overpay, especially with that 5th year, I really think Konerko is a guy who is having a late-peak. While the 5th and possibly the 4th year of the deal could get ugly, it's completely possible that Konerko will put up numbers at 30, 31, and 32 that he put up at 28 and 29. Based on his trends, I don't think it's too much of a leap to suggest that.

As for Adam Dunn, he real good. This is an excellent move for Cincinnati.

You may get your wish, if Krivsky follows Ken Rosenthal's advice:

Krivsky should trade first baseman Adam Dunn, center fielder Ken Griffey and every other high-priced part possible.
