Introducing the candidates to be the Democratic nominee in the 1920 presidential election.

JAMES MIDDLETON COX - Former Governor of Ohio, 1916 Democratic Presidential Candidate


  • Believes that the United States has a duty to not only serve as an example to other nations, but also a mission to end international injustice
  • A former teacher, he is a proponent of educational reform
  • Published several newspapers and is a well-known defendant of right to Freedom of Speech
  • Supported entry into the League of Nations
  • Believes the U.S. should play a greater role in global politics
  • Has championed the idea of a National Council on the Sciences. He believes that the United States should be at the forefront of technological development which will be the catalyst for advances in all other forums.
  • Supports the creation of a National Rescue and Relief Board modeled after his controversial Ohio Conservancy Act of 1914.
  • Favored the amendment for Women's Suffrage
  • Favors limited prohibition of hard liquors

THEODORE GILMORE BILBO - U.S. Senator from Mississippi, 1916 Democratic Vice-Presidential Candidate


  • Only 5' 2", he has a reputation for being a fiery outspoken orator who has been nicknamed "The Man", He often rails against poverty, alcoholism, child labor, inadequate roads, unsafe factories, epidemic diseases, and crowded city housing
  • Publicly split with Cox, asserting that the 1916 presidential election loss was his fault. Despite this, his candidacy has made him one of the most familiar personailites in the government.
  • Known for his tirades on the floor of the Senate, often rebuked by his opponents for his increasing instances of inappropriate langauge.
  • Proponent of the poll tax used across the South
  • One of the main champions of Prohibition, he has been courted by the fledgling Prohibition Party, but he has remained a Democrat due to his belief that he can accomplish more in one of the two major parties.
  • Supports a universal education and a separate but equal doctrine.
  • Portrayed as a champion of the poor white Southern man
  • Has campaigned vigorously for an interstate highway system

PATRICK JOSEPH "P.J." KENNEDY - Governor of Massachusetts


  • Championed the rights of immigrants, being the son of poor Irish Catholics who emigrated a couple years before his birth.
  • Believed in education as a key to improve one's lot in life. He dropped out of school as a teen to support his family by working on the docks of Boston. He later attended Boston College and passed the bar.
  • Opponent of prohibition of alcoholic beverages, he owns a wholesale liquor business.
  • Owns a coal company and has served as president of a bank.
  • Favored U.S. entry into the League of Nations
  • Authored a Bill of Workers Rights that provided a set of legal guidelines for Massachusetts employers
  • Considered an underdog in the race due to his Catholicism, but is hugely popular in the northern states

JOSEPH TAYLOR ROBINSON - U.S. Senator from Arkansas


  • Former Governor of Arkansas
  • Became a teacher at 17, and has continued to support educational reform ever since.
  • Has a reputation as an accomplished essayist and orator.
  • Opposes prohibition, stating that such legislation will only lead to an underground economy run by organized crime.
  • Has authored legislation, protecting small businesses from larger corporations.
  • Supported President Lodge's decision to keep U.S. out of the League of Nations
  • Renowned for his immense work ethic, often working 18 hour days in his Senate office.
