And the penalty for vanity is . . .
So, in my solo league I finally succumbed to the urge and created a player named after myself, who is fairly well above average. (Who creates a sucky version of themselves?)
So, he goes through an excellent season, batting above .350, and we make the Series. What is the price of my vanity? Game 2 of the Series, he gets injured, out for exactly 1 week. He's on the sidelines when we win the title.

During a BBQ a friend and I created ourselves "well" above average and headed out the door to enjoy some beer, the smell of mesquite and some chips and salsa while the steaks sizzle and our careers took flight in 1986. We check on things just before dinner(1990), only to see the standings and the leader boards...and of course to laugh and poke at eachother for any shortcomings, for which of course, there were none except that we seemed to be obsessed with getting to the 80/800 HR barrier and demolishing Rickey's SB records. After some excellent wine and tender steaks made their way towards our bowels(not that fast but...) we noticed our careers started to take a more and more superhuman-like appearance as the .400 batting averages started to pile up(about 1995). Around 1am, we made another check(1998) on the way to the fridge for beer number 16. Life was good and Hall of Fame would surely call as we saw our ages relatively young(I at 31) and our stats off the charts. Our evening mirrored that which was being simulated. As our evening of laughter, liquid and enjoyment progressed so did our careers. As the simulation brought our careers down to earth, our spirits dropped with them. Luckily, I saved a mid-career snapshot from this drunken evening because as soon as we hit 2007, 2008, my friend and I had had so much beer(and other alcohol), and we'd enjoyed our careers alongside our evening, that the melancholy got the best of my friend and he ordered me to destory the league file. He literally cried when he saw that the Cubs had traded him in his twilight years. What disrespect! The OUTRAGE!! Well, here's that mid-career snapshot from my barbeque career: me: http://dream.montoyahome.com/p1072.html My friend: http://dream.montoyahome.com/p1071.html I love this game.

What a team it must have been! The Ambigiously Drunk Duo! Did you really delete the league file? It must have been a real hangover the next morning... |

When I used to play Strat-O-Matic, I sent away to the company and, for $5, they sent me my very own Strat-O-Matic card. The stats I gave myself were kind of silly. I was something like a .330 hitter with 10 strikeouts in 500 AB, a AAA in stealing (best in Strat), 45 doubles, 20 triples. The only thing I didn't give myself was homerun power, since even in my little league days, I was never a power hitter. I think I gave myself like 7 homers. It was an awesome Strat card.

Unbelievable! I made it to the playoffs again the following year. We're up 2-0 in the divisional series. What happens? My namesake injured again, for 1-2 weeks!!!!

My "son" entered the game as a 4.5 star prospect pitcher. He was drafted well before my turn came up. He gets called up almost immediately, and the team that has him won't trade him for anything remotely resembling reality. He proceeds to throw a one-hitter against my team in the middle of our playoff run. We end up with the wildcard, one game back of the division winner, and lose the opening series in the deciding game on the road.
Next season comes around and I find he's been traded. His new team is willing to trade him in a reasonable deal, so I go for it. Mid-August he gets a career ending injury, and the very next season one of the bats I traded for him has an outrageous season and wins batter of the year.

I do this in every game, although I always make an agreement to create exactly 1 young prospect (or randomly select with a number generator one from the draft list - under 18s) and name him for myself regardless. Since OOTP2, I've had maybe 20 different careers of varying lengths and had but one great namesake - a solid SS with career numbers around .310, 400+ HR, 400+ Stolen Bases in a solid 20 or so year career.
What price vanity? Priceless say I.

I also created myself in the game. I tried to make my skills as accurate as possible compared to when I used to play many, many moons ago. I also created a team consisting of my former Babe Ruth League teammates and others who I used to play with in little league. It seems I made myself a little better than I anticipated because I made the all-star team each year.
One time my "clone" got hurt running the bases, but I made myself magically heal and didn't miss any time. But at the same time, if I injured myself IRL, I would probably give the same ailment to my clone just to make it more realistic and add a little storyline to the situation. My contract is also up at the end of next season and I might fudge the financials a little and give myself less than I'm already asking for just to give my team a better chance of re-upping some of my teammates. I don't want to come across as money-hungry! So I guess there's a little give and take when it comes to doing this. Last edited by bjkach; 11-17-2005 at 11:25 PM. |
