Two-Time Gold Glove Winner Derek Jeter
The announcement will supposedly be made today, according to the Post.

That guy deserves it. He really makes the easy plays look hard.

The turn around in his defense the past two years has been extrodinary. (This is true regardless of whether it is recognized by writers.) I assume, as knowledgeable Yankees fans (and I'm too depressed still to point out a possible contradiction there) have posted, that this is due to the ability to position himself in a way that offsets his deficiences while having a great athelete play 3B. I realize that ARod did not have the best defensive numbers this year, but I'd like to see those numbers broken down by area. I imagine, if Dave Pinto looks at it again, that ARod will have snagged an inordinate number of balls in the SS hole shading towards 3B, and fewer than average down the line.

Is his improvement really real this year though? Last year was a great year for him... but I did a study earlier this year that was lost in the crash that showed that the Yanks had a strong GB pitching staff this season.

Unadjusted ZR rates him pretty close to average and BPro's RATE puts him at +5% above average.
Because these are both rate stats, we can say this: if there are more balls on the ground, that means that his ability to get to a higher percentage of those BIP (higher than the past) is more important.

I guess that's what happens when Vizquel changes leagues (ok, I know someone is now going to dig up one of those obscure fielding stats to show Omar has no range either)

Well, looking through the league, only Tejeda could possibly unseat him now.

I forgot about Wells, so 4 CFs. These awards shouldn't piss me off this much, but I just want to beat the ever-living crap out of the idiots who give Ichiro a ****ing Gold Glove. My god, how stupid can people be? Last edited by JDOldSchool; 11-01-2005 at 06:28 PM. |

But he's still fun to watch. ![]() I think Rowand should have won it this year. Or am I making an obvious oversight? |

BP slates Ichiro at 8% above average, using to RATE2. That isn't bad at all. What stat is telling you he isn't worthy of a gold glove?

Apparently, however, the writers don't understand that. |

Dola,
Is it just me or does it seem that the writers just don't care about defense? There just isn't any effort put into it. When players win the award because of offensive stats or because of history rather than performance, it shows that the writers aren't paying attention. They are just as guilty as fairweather fans that chant the most popular player's name. |
