Then & Now: The 2001 MLB Draft

Who would you have drafted then, who would you have drafted now (looking back)?

For me, while I'm a big homer/Minnesota guy, I was quite disappointed the Twins didn't draft Prior. They probably couldn't have signed him though; but they never really gave him the chance.

Looking back, I think it is no question. Mauer is leading the Twins in hitting and only has an upside. He has the slight injury problems, but it almost seems as though it ain't so bad anymore.

I would have gone Prior/Mauer.

*I added an "other" incase you would have done something completely different. But please avoid that, it's only for extreme cases :/. Maybe I shouldn't have put that...oh well*

Darn I was hopign this was a look back at the 2001 MLB draft to see how the draftees did so far

Prior then and Mauer now but there's no question that Prior has the higher ceiling. I just don't see him ever staying healthy, what a waste of a hall of fame right arm.

I agree with TJ on this. There are usually enough chances to add a legitimate franchise pitcher to your team -- but with catchers, not so much.

Track stars who can't really do much of anything else shouldn't be drafted any higher than that.

With all due respect to Martinez who is a fine player...Mauer is almost his equal right now...and he's 23 while Martinez is 27. Right now it is a toss-up as to who is better. In a year or two Mauer will be well ahead barring injury or any other unforseen eventuality.

Oh, I'd definitely take Mauer over Martinez. But I think Martinez is a pretty close #2 to Mauer for the future. They're the Pudge/Piazza of this generation of players.

I'm not so sure I agree with that. Mauer hasn't proven he has 20+ homerun pop something Martinez was doing at age 24/25.

Mauer: AVG .338 | HR 4 | RBI 23 | OBP .406 | SLG .473 | $400,000

Wow. I know Victor has been consistent and Mauer hasn't had two full years like Victor, but 2006 numbers for Mauer are looking mighty fine.

I think a lot of people putting the Mauer/Mauer option aren't being honest with themselves.

I can't imagine that over 50% of you guys a few years back would have taken a HIGH SCHOOL CATCHER who almost played football, over one of the most impressive and dominating college pitchers of all time.

I certainly agree Mauer looks to be a big time catcher for years to come and will probably have a better career than Prior but I highly doubt a few years ago you thought Mauer was a better pick.

ESPN is saying he hit 23/20 when he was 25/26, unless I'm adding wrong.

Mauer is projected to hit 15+ (if he stays healthy and at pace) at age 23.

So you're saying exactly what I'm saying, just a different way. He needs to bump up the power numbers significantly if he wants to be "well ahead" of Martinez in 2 years.
