Selecting An Opponent

OK. You've got a fighter that you like and you're ready to get him a fight. How do you go about selecting an opponent? Say, your guy is 16-1 against mostly mediocre opposition, but he's beaten those guys easily. You're at a crucial point. You don't want to see this mug get creamed in the first round, but you need to move on up.

Do you analyse the one loss and try to avoid a similar boxer? Do you take that same guy on again to reverse the loss? What do you look at? Do you sort fighters in the main list according to their ratings (which you wouldn't really know so precisely in real life) to find a good beatable opponent? In real life, you'd check a potential opponent for his win-loss record, ask is he lefty or righty, has he got some pop or really heavy hands, what kind of style does he have, would his style give your guy fits or make him look bad, etc. Then you add all of this up and weigh the risk and possible reward.

Or do you folks just use some kind of mathematical selection system?

Good question -

Depending on how his first loss went (Dec, KO or TKO) I would like for him to try and reverse that loss (unless it is just a completely bad style match-up for him).

I have the system that I follow which doesn't leave much of a choice, but generally if I like the fight I will try and pick the easier fight for him. Like Herrera in my uni ... if given a choice between two 7 rated fighters he has to fight and one is a boxer and one a slugger ... I'll go with the slugger because he has consistently lost to boxers.

Now if my set-up indicates he has to fight the next highest rated fighter and there is only one 7 rated fighter, then that's who he fights.
